“Books are the carriers of civilization.” ~ Barbara Tuchman
Today, I want to acknowledge Off the Beaten Path Bookstore in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for the very nice event they sponsored last evening.
Harriet Freiberger, author of Then and Now: A History of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Dorothy Wickenden author of Nothing Daunted came together to speak about their books and about writing history. Sharing lots of great advice about doing historical research for books in museums, the importance of “nailing down” the character of a place and bringing a sense of time to a story. All very helpful information for someone who is writing a story that includes historical perspective and elements.
Freiberger also spoke about another of her books, a biography called Lucien Maxwell: Villain or Visionary. In short, he was a legendary character, a New Mexican pioneer, who purchased two million acres and built communities. To read more about this book, please follow this link.

Wickenden’s book, a New York Times bestseller, isabout two brave women who moved from the East Coast in 1916, after graduating Smith College, to a very foreign environment – rural, remote Colorado to teach school in a one room schoolhouse.
