“Only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the way you use them.” ~Unknown
Cynthia Olsen’s book, “Looking Up: Seven Steps for a Healthy & Youthful Midlife and Beyond is part resource and part personal testimony. It very effectively tells a story of someone who recognized at a young age, the importance of the mind-body-spirit connection. The insights she shares about her ancestors health gives the reader motivation to know that we need not be inheritors of poor eating habits, and diseased bodies and spirits. We are in charge of our own experience.
“Looking Up: Seven Steps for a Healthy & Youthful Midlife and Beyond is an IPPY Gold Medal award-winning book. The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) has recognized the book for excellence in independent publishing. This book is not the first book Kali Press has published for Olsen. “Joy isn’t in things, money or positions. It is IN us. And we need to bring it with us and SHARE it!” ~ Unknown
Day Two of 2013! My resolution this year is to do something a little different each month, to promote our growing population of independent publishers here in Routt County, Colorado.
Why? Because I believe greatly in each one of our We Write Steamboat, independent publishers. They are a creative and well-educated group of people, male and female. Many of them are award-winning authors with award-winning books! Each of them is a healer of mind, body and spirit! They have career knowledge in all sorts of fields. Our members include teachers, physicians, life consultants,a chef, holistic health consultants, experts on our natural environment, just to name a few. All with valuable experience in life to write about. Our group also includes young people and retirees who like to spin yarns just for the fun of it! (Of course, they don’t object to selling their books, also!)
In my opinion, all writers are helpers and healers of mind, body and spirit! After all, we publish books to educate, inspire others, entertain, and inform readers. Could there be better reasons? I don’t think so. In fact, writing is as therapeutic for the author as well as the reader. It gives us a way to share our thoughts, emotions, experiences and our imaginations. http://bit.ly/ZSk0Yc.
A networking group of independent publishers, She Writes Steamboat, that I began almost two years ago, has grown, and as of January 1, 2013 we have changed our name to We Write Steamboat. From the very first meeting, we have had male writers attend, and we don’t want them to feel slighted! We’ve welcomed them and have been delighted to have them part of the group from our inception.
We, independent publishers here in Ski Town, USA and Routt County, Colorado, come together and meet monthly. In a nutshell, because producing independent books, films and music is a win-win for the artist creating the work as well as for the audience who so enjoys it! Our mission is to provide networking opportunity and to promote success of independent publishing. Our affiliation with the Colorado Independent Publishers Association www.cipabooks.com , also fosters our growth as award-winning writers and publishers.
If you wish to learn more about starting up an independent publishing networking group in your area, contact me through this blog.

“Be faithful to that which exists within yourself.” ~ Andre Gide
Yesterday’s blog posting led me to much deeper thoughts about the value of writing about health issues.
There are many men, women, and couples, who have found help and spiritual healing by writing about their own experiences of dealing with health issues of all kinds. If it weren’t for independent publishing, many of these stories would not be available for others to read. Important that these stories be told to help others who are going through difficult diagnoses and treatment, independent publishing serves as a valuable avenue in getting these books out to the public. Unique books, with personal stories, are often sold and marketed through e-commerce (sold on the internet).
There are many books available on cancer but there are three independently published books that I would like to mention in honor National Breast Cancer Month. To read more about these publications or to order them, please visit the links beside each title.

Fine Black Lines: Reflections on Facing Cancer, Fear and Loneliness by Lois Tschetter Hjelmstad http://bit.ly/Qrb1D2
The Heroics of Falling Apart: One Couple’s Breast Cancer Journey, Julie and Dan Gordon http://bit.ly/SYjX7x
The Cancer Odyssey Author: Margaret Brennan Brumel http://bit.ly/RAPOrH
As a member of the Colorado Independent Publishers Association www.cipabooks.com , I have the opportunity to meet many authors who have published award-winning stories that help others. Although I do not know Julie and Dan Gordon or Margaret Bermel, I do know Lois Tschetter Hjelmstad. She is an amazing woman for many reasons, not just because she is a cancer survivor. She also has written other books about personal relationships. Each time I see her at a publishing event, we enjoy speaking with boeach other. I have observed something that she writes about – a very, very long lasting, successful marriage. She has been married 64 years, as have my parents. Her musings on what it means to have a fulfilling marriage are thoughtful and inciteful.
Although you may think your own story would not be of interest to others, I encourage people to find creative ways of telling them. It may just benefit someone else or at least yourself.

“We’ve arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology.” ~ Carl Sagan
On Monday, our local paper Steamboat Today was printed on pink paper in honor of National Breast Cancer Month. It seems that no one is immune from knowing someone who has been touched by this cancer. The month of October is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of early detection.
The color of the newspaper was more than just a blush of pink, bolder than that, yet not as dark as fuchsia either. That edition made me realize something – the importance of white space. Although, as always, I read the paper from cover to cover, I found reading from pink paper difficult and in fact, it slowed down my progress because my eyes were straining. As I struggled to read the article on raising money at the local level through events such as The Bust of Steamboat http://thebustofsteamboat.org/, I couldn’t help but think of what white space means to publishing.
Digital reading devices, such as Kindles, have now gone through a few generations of development, improvements have come with each new model. The Kindle Paperwhite is purported to give the reader the clearest text, the best reading experience, due to its bright white screen. Yet not everyone can afford this top model. Many people do not have the luxury of buying a digital reader at all.
I thought about how this relates to funding for breast cancer. Over the years, there have been advancements in detection through technology, yet people still slip through the cracks and find out about their case too late. Not every woman is able to afford mammograms and treatments either, which means not every woman has a chance of survival. Thank goodness for non-profit organizations such as the Susan G Komen Foundation http://bit.ly/TqInTF at the national and local level that work hard at trying to provide the means for everyone through their fundraising efforts.
I don’t mean to trivialize the devastating disease of breast cancer by comparing technology of Kindle readers to a very personal medical issue. Digital reading devices are luxuries, and having medical technology and treatment for cancer is a necessity for survival; two very different issues.
These are just a few independent thoughts that came to my mind regarding white space as I read the news of the day on pink paper. That’s all….

“Laughter is the best way to make somebody’s heart beat.” ~ Robert Holden
Happy Labor Day Monday – just a light-hearted subject this morning. Good to focus on fulfilling things other than publishing, every so often.
Don’t you love having life long friends? I have quite a number, but there is one friend who has brought more cheerful times and humor to my life than I can tell you. We met the first day I arrived on my college campus. Her nickname is “Chatterbox,” for good reason. More fittingly, however, her name should be “Chatter, the Character! ” She’s made of stuff that you read about.
The other day was Chatter’s 29th wedding anniversary, and much to my surprise, when I went to her Facebook page to send her “Happy Anniversary Wishes” there was a picture of her all dressed up in the wedding dress she wore 29 years ago, complete with floral bouquet in hand. The dress still fit, she’s always been tall and slender. I was bowled over with happiness and warm feelings when I saw the image. Nostalgic thoughts came flooding back; my twin sister and I were bridesmaids in her wedding. I’ll never forget when she left the reception for her honeymoon. She exited sitting on the back of a convertible, Jackie Kennedy Onassis style, as if in a parade, waving to the wedding crowd while her newly betrothed husband drove the car. It was something she said “she had been waiting to do her whole life.”
Of course, as soon I saw the image she posted on Facebook the other day, I wrote a comment and an exchange of e-mails soon followed. Evidently, on the morning of her anniversary, she had awoken her husband of 29 years all dressed up in her gown. What pleasure I felt in my heart when I saw her again in her wedding outfit; I can only imagine what the surprise did for her husband.
Could this be a new trend for women who are celebrating their wedding anniversaries? A chance for ladies to wear those gowns every year, rather than only once in a lifetime. It might be healthy for marriage; bringing fulfilling memories back and a reminder of what was promised. What better motivation for women to maintain their girlish figures - so they can fit into their gowns each year. Perhaps a way to reduce healthcare costs for women.
Today, this blog is in honor of my friend Chatter! She has overcome adversity in her life, and a bout with cancer – always with dignity and honor and humor.
Girlfriend – you are an inspiration! You remind me that laughter brings sweetness to life and friendship. I will see you next spring or early next summer as we have planned.

“Great stories happen to those who can tell them.” ~ Ira Glass
May seem a little premature, since summer has just arrived, but there is an opportunity to give yourself, or a loved one, a literary Valentine’s present that could change a life forever.
Writing for the Soul, a writer’s conference sponsored by Jerry B Jenkins Christian Writers Guild, is on the calendar for February 14 – 17, 2013 at the beautiful, award-winning Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs,Colorado.
By then, images of fires brought on by the draught of summer, will be replaced by sparkling snow in the magnificent Rocky Mountains and with plans for fulfilling your dreams of telling your story of faith through a publication.
Morning and afternoon educational sessions, visits with literary agents and editors and the fellowship of other Christian Writers will consume three days of your literary education “vacation.”
For more information on this conference, please visit this link. http://bit.ly/hDfACC.

“We could never have loved the earth so well if we had had no childhood in it.” ~George Eliot
Ok, I am a push-over for nostalgia, I’ll admit . Last week I stumbled upon a book in the library that satisfied my need to sometimes look back. Patty Jane’s House of Curl tickled me pink with its references to Dippity Do, Motorola televisions, permanent solutions, gingersnaps, jukeboxes, and Duz detergent.
The author of this book, Lorna Landvik, writes with warm humor and has crafted a book of charm without the storyline being too sappy sweet. Much of the special appeal of the tale is a result of where the narrative takes place – in Minnesota among a strong community of Norwegians.
Landvik effectively bridges the gap between an era gone by and present day by approaching issues that have always existed, but were much less talked about. The human emotions of the characters in dealing with topics presented in the book run the spectrum in a very real sense.
I really liked this book. Check it out of your local library! Pour yourself a grape Nehi, settle into your armchair, pull up a footstool and enjoy a delightful read. Have a handkerchief and the antimacassars on the arm of the chair ready to catch the tears of both laughter and sorrow; you may possibly need them. Patty Jane’s House of Curl is a fun and fulfilling read on a very humanistic level.

“It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself. “
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Tis the season for illumination. Today, on All Things Fulfilling I am going to focus on all things that shine.
- A clear star lit night
- Tinsel on the tree
- New parents and child experiencing their first Xmas together.
- Icicles hanging from the eave of a roof
- Lives spared by a Kiwanis and UNICEF Maternal and Neo-natal Tetanus vaccine
- Polished silverware
- Rudolph’s red rose
- A gemstone given as a surprise gift
- Glitter on a holiday card or an ornament
- Candles on a tree, a mantel or on a festive holiday table
- Snowflakes as they fall from the sky
- A child’s face when they discover a book that draws them in
- A beautiful painting, surrounded by golden frame
- Crystal stemware
- Someone who is passionate about the Art they create
- Sequins on festive holiday clothing
- Love discovered, love renewed in the spirit of Christmas
- The face of the elderly or a veteran knowing and feeling that others really care
- Twinkling white lights decorating a house
- A lit lamp post standing sentinel for the arrival of holiday guests

If you really want light up your own spirit this year, adopt a holiday family. Make some one else’s holiday shine by giving some gifts or fixing’s for a big holiday meal.Holiday buying this Christmas, was especially fulfilling for me. I bought a few items for a set of twins who otherwise may not have had Christmas at all. More fun than the gifts given inside of the box, I created wrapping that really showed that I cared. When all is said and done, I think the packaging will be as treasured as much as the gifts inside!
This year, buy one less gift for your own family, and give it to a family less fortunate and in need. Here is a website that lists the top five Christmas charity projects. http://bit.ly/8ZBCef.
Make your heart merry and illuminate the spirit of someone else this holiday season!

“What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” ~ Napoleon Hill
Today, on All Things Fulfilling, we are going to turn our attention back to the very reason some readers return to this website time and time again.
The publishing industry is increasingly changing and we use this space to keep our readers up to date about new developments in independent publishing. Now at a time where independent publishing represents more than 50% of all publishing revenue, every day someone new decides to tell their story through the written word. No longer do you have to have an agent or a letter of acceptance from a publishing house in order to move forward with publishing a book. Anyone can be an independent publisher and sell their books, films or music through e-commerce and learn to promote it through e-marketing. For best results, however, some education is needed to learn how to become visible and effectively reach potential book buyers through the internet.
The Colorado Independent Publishers Association (CIPA )is a great resource, and especially for beginning independent publishers. There are valuable downloadable webinars available that will provide you with a basic introduction to the industry and help you along the way. The webinars are affordable and will help you explore and navigate your way through the independent publishing process. To start you along the journey, take an 18 minute tour of “On the Fast Track: The Independent Publishing Industry.” http://bit.ly/oIkV2g.
Before you jump in with your publishing project, my advice would be to learn what you can through downloadable webinars, join an independent book publishers association in your State of residence and attend independent publishing conferences.
Here in Colorado, the Colorado Independent Publishers Association is at the forefront of developing a fulfilling relationship with libraries for e-book selling. Learn about this partnership, through this article http://bit.ly/dNEX6N.
Check back with us tomorrow, and we will bring you more independent thoughts, words and views about an industry that is fulfilling the needs of many people who want to be visible through their written words.
