EVVY Awards at the Lone Tree Art Center Tomorrow!

May 16, 2012

Feeling a part of that community is my greatest reward.” ~ Paul Parker

Last Saturday, I attended the last monthly meeting of the Colorado Independent Publishers Association meeting until September. It was well attended and members voted in the new Board of Directors for next year. Thank you to outgoing President Dan Miller, the Executive Director, Karen Reddick and the Board of  Directors for serving over the last year. Great strides were made over the past year by increasing membership and also in forming an e-book partnership with the Douglas County Libraries. Great job!

Tomorrow night is the grand celebration of the year for the Colorado Independent Publishers Association.(CIPA).  The EVVY book awards will be held at the Lone Tree Art Center, in Lone Tree,Colorado. I am especially excited this year because we have finalists in the contest from our independent publishers group, SHe Writes Steamboat! Best of luck to the following authors:

  • Trevor Boehm’s book Louie’s Saxophone submitted by Leslie & Ali Boehm
  • Karen Gilroy Discovering the Healer Within
  • Mary Kurtz At Home in the Elk River Valley
  • Dawn V. Obrecht, M.D.  Mission Possible

A total of 190 books were submitted and judged for the EVVY Awards this year. All contestants all should be proud of their accomplishments of writing and publishing their books. From the list of finalists, it appears there will be some wonderful books added to the CIPA catalog;  titles that are unique and out of the ordinary – the beauty of independent publishing.

If you are someone who is considering independently publishing, I highly recommend that no matter what state you reside in that you research whether there is an independent publishing association that you can join. The benefit and support is well worth it.

Colorado is very fortunate to have one of the largest and most active independent publishing associations in the country.  To read about the benefits of becoming a member, please visit this link. http://bit.ly/w2f0gu.

I look forward to being at the EVVY awards tomorrow night. Next week, I hope to post some photographs of the event!

What is Your Focus?

April 26, 2012

“Creative thinking is not a talent, it is a skill that can be learnt. It empowers people by adding strength to their natural abilities which improves teamwork, productivity and where appropriate profits.” –- Edward de Bono, creativity writer

Back in February, as author of  All Things Fulfilling, I was featured on Ann Kochenberger’s “Out of Focus Again” website.  http://bit.ly/IpusLy.

Ann said this about my blog site “Her articles vary in subject matter so you never know what each day will bring.” I like that! She got it right. My primary focus is all things independent publishing. But art and inspiration tops the list, too. In fact, sometimes those subjects consume me. When you consider it, all are linked in with  creativity – independent words, views and thought.

Many published authors shy away blogging and from social media marketing, in my opinion, a big mistake! Fewer and fewer companies and individuals are using direct mail and print advertising to promote their products and services to potential buyers.  E- Marketing provides opportunity for reaching large communities of people who are interested in the same thing you are – your product or service. Isn’t  that the objective,  if you want to sell your independent publications?

What many independent publishers do not realize is that blogging and social media marketing is fun – an opportunity to use your creativity. Although it may seem like  there is an “out of focus again” variety of subjects that are on this website, believe me when I tell you, there is a method behind my madness. In fact, I am astonished at the number of followers from all over the world that have an interest in All Things Fulfilling. Thank you readers, for that!

So, I will continue to share my passion for independent publishing, art and inspiration. Sometimes in my blogging,  I even manage to surprise myself. When that happens, I really feel as if I have hit the marc!

A Visionary Shipment of Creative Thought

April 25, 2012

When you have vision it affects your attitude. Your attitude is optimistic rather than pessimistic.” ~ Charles R. Swindoll

All winter it felt as if I was trying to describe a scene, while looking through dirty windows; everything was cloudy and blurred. No matter how hard I tried, I could not find a clear vision for my writing project.

Suddenly, it is as if a shade has been lifted from the window pane, and things are now crystalline. I have made more progress over the past few days on my project than I had in a few months.

Did the rant I posted the other day entitled “Moving Heaven and Earth” actually work? Or did change come with the official arrival of spring? What is it that  has given rise to a renewed spirit and creativity? Perhaps it is inside of me.

It really does not matter what the catalyst behind the incoming stream of  inspiration is.  Now I’ve got better focus! A clear direction and faith in what I am writing about. I will keep going and not stop until I have reached my goals.

Today’s blog post is just one way to celebrate the arrival of a shipment of fulfilling  thought. There are plenty more ideas on  how I can celebrate success as I move closer to the culmination of my endeavor, here’s a list http://bit.ly/A8gXuR

Today, I will simply lionize by saying “I feel great and have the courage and momentum needed to finish this publishing project!

Regard for the Book

March 26, 2012

Acceptance of prevailing standards often means we have no standards of our own. – Jean Toomer

Snakes, fingernails scraped across a chalk board and bedbugs are just a few things that make people cringe. What makes me cringe? Books being transported, in tote bags, to book selling events and ill-fitting cartons, which allow books to slide.

Last week, over the internet, on an on-line forum for independent publishers, a person posed a question “Should books be shrink wrapped or not?”

“ Yes…..yes…,” I said “it is worth the extra expense!”

A pet peeve for me is seeing paperback books and hard-covered books with dust jackets being sold with dog-eared corners and pages, when the buyer is expecting brand new.  Independent publishers, it has become even more important to sell your publications at book events in pristine condition. If someone wants to buy a used book, they will go to a place like Amazon or a bookstore that sells used books and pay less than top price.

If you are selling your book at top price, have your books shrink wrapped, so your buyer is guaranteed the purchase of a brand new book. Don’t want to go to the extra expense, you say? If you are handing your own order fulfillment, consider doing the shrink wrapping yourself. Here is a resource for  supplies. http://bit.ly/GHz3WX

Respect the product you have lovingly created, respect your customer and the money they are spending for a new publication and respect yourself as a top quality independent publisher. It is as simple as that.

Return tomorrow for a tip or two on how to select an order fulfillment company that respects your publications, too.

Individual Integrity in Publishing

March 22, 2012

I received an interesting blog comment two weeks ago from a reader regarding the post “Paranormal Book Sales.”  The response from the reader was that if “he was going to put his work out there,” meaning publish it, “he wanted his book in-print.” I respect that! Deciding whether to publish an e-book or a book in- print, or audio book  is an individual decision, there is no right or wrong. Depends on your purpose and objectives for publishing and what feels right.

The same reader went on to say that not only does he want his book in print, “he wants the second opinion of an editor.” My reply to his remark “publishing an e-book does not preclude you from having a book edited.” This brings up a good point for our blog subject today.

Editors are key players when it comes to putting quality publications and productions into the market place. Authors use editors. Filmmakers use editors. Music producers use  audio editors.

From the point of view of a person serving the independent publishing industry, putting quality publications out into the marketplace is of foremost importance, if non-traditional publishing is to continue to grow. Having a publication edited is all part of the process.

The Colorado Independent Publishers Association www.cipacatalog.com has been a leading force in getting high quality independent e-books into library catalogs. Excellence is crucial in order to advance this trend. I endorse this position whole heartedly!

Eric Leppert’s words about fulfilling a responsibility to an industry in my opinion, is spot on. “Professionalism is not about adherence to the policies of a bureaucracy. Professionalism is about having the integrity, honesty, and sincere regard for the personhood of the customer, in the context of always doing what is best for the business.”

More independent thoughts, words and views from www.CornerstoneFulfillmentService.com will be posted tomorrow. Please return!

Itchy Niches for Books

March 14, 2012

Look, all you can do when you find your niche is go with it.” ~ Vincent D’Onofiro

Independent publishers, have you put any creative thought into selling your goods in out-of-ordinary places?  Many independent publishers have great success when they find the proper niche market and then capitalize on that. Non-fiction, in particular, lends itself well to selling in non-traditional places where your publication compliments a main line of business. For instance:

  • If you are an independent musician who has produced a CD of music that leads a listener into quietness, meditation and contemplation, a massage therapist may welcome having a reinforcing product to offer his or her clients.
  • A home goods store selling refurbished or salvaged furniture and accessories may be itching to get their hands on a book to sell in the store about creating a beautiful home by “turning trash into treasure.”
  • Realtors may want to purchase publications on “How to Ready your Home for a Successful Sale” as a premium product to offer to their prospective clients.

Independent publishers are known for publishing books, films and music that is different than what can be found in bookstores and in traditional retail environments. You never know, your publication may be just “the thing” a catalog company, an association/organization or a retail environment (other than a bookstore) is scratching to find.

Leave no stone unturned when putting your marketing plans together for your independent publication. As an independent publisher and independent business-owner it means researching non-traditional spaces and places to sell your book.  Start locally and find what works, then expand your visibility into other communities where your niche publication fits.

Remember, packaging and branding is important too. Corner your niche market with a quality ,desirable and unique publication, market it well and you will see fulfilling, positive results.

Engage in Results Based Marketing

March 13, 2012

Being entirely honest with oneself is good exercise.” ~ Sigmund Freud

I’ve never thought that I have an addictive personality – could care less about chocolate, drugs have never been my thing and I tend to avoid big blasts of caffeine. A morning and afternoon cup of honey-laced tea is for me. Don’t even mingle with a just few sips of alcohol. It puts me off my feet. I’m not fitness-crazed; only the recommended daily walk.  Yet I have developed a co-dependency, there is no doubt!

Addictive personality traits help people deal with life, and in my case, addiction to social media brings gratification to the heart of the business. The substance behind the addiction of internet marketing is communication. How can anyone isolate themselves and not do business without engaging in social media? It does not work. Fact of the matter is, and I am not just trying to rationalize, in this day and age does anyone have a better choice?

All Things Fulfilling is my enabler. The blog connects me with other folks who live, breathe and talk independent publishing and find fulfillment in the creative arts.  My addiction to blogging is fueled by results.

This is one addiction worth hanging on to. If you are an independent business owner of any kind (including those who work in the creative arts) who is getting few positive results from  old fashioned marketing tactics, such as in-print ads and direct mailings, there is help available. Remember, we are now in the digital age.

Contact a company that specializes in e-commerce and e-marketing for independent publishers. Learn about the new dimension in advertising and promotion that is far reaching and relatively low cost. It is worth getting hooked ..

Platforms for Readers include Laps

March 7, 2012

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” — Emilie Buchwald

Book buyers base their decisions on feelings. Yes, they look at the ink and the quality of paper but the ultimate decision comes down to what is in this book for me?  If a consumer is buying fiction – they may ask “Will his book send me on a grand adventure, a magical fantasy or a romantic interlude?”  If the buyer is purchasing non-fiction, the decision is based on whether the knowledge, inspiration or help that they need is inside the cover of the book.

Decision-making in book buying now includes another yet another option. Shall it be hardcover, a perfect bound soft-cover book, an e-book or audiobook?   E-books have seen spectacular growth. The Wall Street Journal http://on.wsj.com/hZCMtj is predicting e-book revenues in 2012 of 2.0 billion dollars.

Why? Because people are discovering it does not matter what kind of platform you read on as long as you find fulfilling content. It is as plain and simple as that.

With the arrival of e-books, young people have all kinds of digital content at their dispose on the devices that never leave their hands. Will this new generation become life long readers with the help of e-books? It is difficult to forecast, only time will tell.

Foster a love of reading in your home. Parents, when buying books consider what kind of reading platform would best engage your child.

Read an E-Book Week

March 6, 2012

I have seen how the foundations of the world are laid, and I have not the least doubt that it will stand a good while.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

We are smack dab in the middle of Read an e-Book Week

More and more Americans are gaining access to the internet through WiFi. No longer tethered to desktop computers, communicating through digital devices in most communities, is possible even when we are on the go. Many people have traded in their telephone landlines for wireless phones. Smart Phones and i-phones are very handy for accessing electronic bookstore catalogs if you do not have a Kindle, a Nook or any other brand of digital reader.

If you have a hand-held device already, why not join in on Read an e-Book Week? It involves no monetary investment at all. There are plenty of e-books you can download for free or for less than the cost of a cup of coffee. A trip to the bookstore or to the library is no longer necessary to pick up a good read. You probably have what you need to locate and download a fulfilling book right in your hand!

What do you like to read? Fiction, non-fiction, mystery, chick lit, mind-body-spirit, detective stories or comic books? E-books are now available in most genres or categories of literature. Books for young readers and academic textbooks in are available in digital format, too.

Think what sustainable publishing will mean to this new generation of readers as they grow up. They are witnessing the building of a strong foundation for green publishing now.  Print on demand publishing and e-books means a reduced number of books will end up in landfills. That is a good thing!

Although Read an e-Book Week is designated from March 4 to 11th, the beauty of independent on-line bookstores is you can gain access 24/7! No locked doors at any time. Pick up a book whenever you want – the store is always be open.

It is a very exciting time for independent publishers. Do you have story to tell? Join in!
