This is the third Tuesday of February. A lot of independent publishers in this town know exactly what that means. It is time for our monthly meet-up group to gather and network about all things independent publishing here in Steamboat Springs,Colorado.
For those who may not be able to attend our get together at 4:00pm today, I am going to release some important news.
I am so pleased to announce that Steamboat Springs, Colorado has been chosen as a select community to be involved with UNESCO’s World Book Night on April 23rd.
At a meeting two months ago, I brought the idea forward of joining in with World Book Night. SHe Writes Steamboat members were enthused. I submitted an application along with a short essay about why our community should be included in this event designed to encourage literacy among light or non-readers.
The organizers of World Book Night have determined that Steamboat Springs, Colorado is a community that values literacy , reading and writing. We will be included in this world-wide event.
Thank you in advance to members of SHe Writes Steamboat who have volunteered to participate on the night of April 23rd. More information will follow soon about the title of the book our members will be distributing in our town and the organizations that will benefit from this literacy event.

At our weekly meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Steamboat Springs,Colorado http://bit.ly/w1qdgz a staff member from the local Indie Bound Bookstore came to update us on a program that our organization supports.
Thousands and thousands of Advance Reader Copies and galley copies are sent to bookstores and libraries all over the country each and every year. ARCs are uncorrected proofs that can not be resold in retail in environments or placed on shelves in libraries. They serve as advance promotion and advertising for publications soon to be released.
The Kiwanis Club of Steamboat assists with funding shipping costs to send Advance Reader Copies of books to families of military troops. www.operationpaperback.org For those who do not have access to a variety of books ARCs are a perfect way of fulfilling a need for literature for children and adults in far off places of the world.
As we discussed this wonderful program, that saves hundreds of thousands of books from ending up in landfills each and every year, I began to think how a complete systemic change in the way ARCS are delivered would save a lot of postage and delivery charges for publishers and as well as time and money for those disposing of the ARCS once they have been read and reviewed.
Making wise choices and changes from printing to marketing is all a part of sustainable publishing. Do you think sample chapters of books on-line is enough to make an informed decision as to whether a book is worth purchasing or not? We would like to hear from you.

Today, I received by mail, my monthly issue of Kiwanis Magazine. The 97th Annual Kiwanis International Convention is being held in New Orleans this summer. The eclectic culture that permeates the city will provide a lively experience for Kiwanians coming together from all over the world.
Hospitality and conventions are not new to this city. The spirit of the “Crescent City” and its residents has always been joyfully shared with tourists through the city’s music, regional culinary delights and architecture. There are French, Cajun, Spanish, Creole, Carribean influences throughout the city and it’s people.
In 2005, deadly Hurricane Katrina hit the city of New Orleans. The images our country saw on television were beyond belief. At the time, our son was a junior at an outstanding high school with a state of the art film program. His school, Burr and Burton Academy www.burrburton.org sent him and another student, an outstanding writer, to Louisiana to produce a documentary film about the ravages of the storm on the city and its people. A contingent of other compassionate and giving students went along to do relief work – cleaning up and mucking out flooded houses. They did all they could, while they were there, to help families to rebuild their lives.
The film footage that our son returned with, after two trips to the scene, gave my husband and me an even deeper look at the devastation and the despair. Seven years ago, I thought “how in the world will they ever restore their properties and their spirits? There is so much to do.”
The city of New Orleans has proven it has spirit and soul! The city has begun humming with activity again. Its people are fulfilling examples for others that we can rise above the worst of times with the right attitude.

Have you noticed that the way we select reading material has changed with the arrival of e-books? Now we have more to go by than just reading reviews on the back cover and the flaps of the book. Many authors are offering sample chapters or abbreviated versions of their books on-line to get us hooked. It works!
Last night I searched Google i-books and downloaded a sample of a non-fiction publication by Susan Cain. The title of the e-book is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking. A monkey is now on my back!
Being a life time consumer of self-help books, the sample left me wondering whether I am truly an introvert. Just prior to the end of the sample book, is a brief test that is designed to determine if you are a true introvert. It is similar to a Myers-Briggs personality test. My score indicates that perhaps I am an ambivert. In other words, I have tendencies toward being both introverted and extroverted.
I must read on to begin fulfilling my need to examine the degree of introversion that I possess and how to best use my traits for success.
Good job, Susan Cain. Your book sample grabbed me enough to want to finish the book. Now, I must just find the time to purchase it and carry on.

Today, we are featuring first time author Darcie Chan. She will be the first of many to come authors who have found success as an independent publisher of an electronic book. Darcie Chan is an environmental lawyer who has entered into the contemporary publishing market with her novel The Mill River Recluse.
The story, set in Vermont, is about a wealthy occupant in mysterious marble house. The main character suffers from a social disorder, limiting her to communicate through her bedroom window with a few key characters in her town. Chan weaves a story of love and friendship that has landed this fictitious novel on the New York Times best seller e-book list. Indie Reader touts the book “as real page turner.” Excellent reviews have come from Kirkus and it also holds a place on the USA Today’s list of best selling books, too.
More of 430,000 copies of Darcie Chan’s novel have been sold. It is downloadable from the leading on-line booksellers at a very affordable price of 99 cents. She has already made more than she in all likelihood would have been paid as an advance from a traditional publisher.
Darcie Chan is just one example of an author who has decided to go the digital publishing route, and has found success as an unknown writer. I find this business of blog writing rather intriguing, as a self-motivating force. I really enjoy what I do! Nearly every time I pen my thoughts, I publish them on this site. Blogs are not posted by “default.” Deliberate and conscious choices are made about what to write. I continually ask myself “Will this strike a chord in someone else, too?” The pulse of the readers hearts are heard when they respond.
If I don’t take ownership of my words, my writing becomes idle jabber. Who wants to hear that! Blog writing forces me into action day after day after day. It moves me to practice what I preach and honor my own word. No one expects more of me than I do of myself. Keeping promises to my readers in providing useful information and inspiration is a fulfilling thing, too!
Not all blog writers have a come-uppance with themselves over their published writings as I do. After all, fiction writing is made up. This blog site speaks of issues that are truly near and dear to my heart – the independent publishing industry and finding ones own bliss in life. Thankfully, it is a creative journey with no end point.
“Dominion over my own self” is what I call my passion for blog writing. There is great self empowerment in that. Although I have set some high goals for the coming year, I remind myself, life is a process of becoming, not standing still.
How about you? Will you practice the art of living by honoring your heart? Rebuild your life by making a shift in how you live this year and be bound to your words through your actions. All things are then fulfilling.

As I write this final blog post for the year 2011, I am taking stock of many of the exciting things that have transpired over the past year within the independent industry and in my corner of the publishing universe.
The independent publishing industry is gaining momentum here and everywhere. In June, I formed a networking group for independent publishers in Routt County. Six months later, I am happy to report She Writes Steamboat is an affiliate member of the Colorado Independent Publishers Association. We are over 30 “independents” strong, here in Steamboat. A healthy interest group, ranging from want-to-bes to newly-published to experienced publishers who are looking for support. All wish to be successful in their writing efforts and in selling their quality books. Many have new projects in the works and are exploring e-book publishing, too. Just yesterday, at our monthly SHe Writes Steamboat meeting, a bright and ambitious 16 yr old high school girl joined us. She has already published and is selling her first e-book.

Over the past year, I have been a contributing writer for the Steamboat Today Newspaper (The Steamboat Pilot). Interviewing and featuring the work of artists in different fields – painters, an actress/producer, independent filmmakers, writers and more on this blog site, has been fun. I am thrilled and grateful for all the opportunities I have had this year. It has been so rewarding to build relationships with blog readers, too. Thank you for visiting this site!

Dear Santa,
It has been many, many years since I have sent a letter to you in the North Pole. I want you to know I am grateful for the gifts that I have received throughout my life. I have much to be appreciative for and many of the gifts you have given me have been even grander than I could ever have dreamed. Sometimes, I don’t even realize how meaningful the gifts have been until long after they have been received.
This year, I have a special request for Christmas. I would appreciate it if you would do what you possibly can to fulfill my gift wish list. I do understand if there are things that you can not give me, perhaps the timing is not right. I recognize you often get requests from people who should work on getting the gifts themselves.
Several months ago, I embarked on telling my story. That’s right, I am writing a book. I have only just begun, so in order to complete my task, I need your elves to help me out. Hopefully, they will have the necessary tools and materials to help me construct what I am asking for. I will try to describe what I need, as best as I can.
- Perseverance and patience – bring the biggest boxes of those items that you have!
- Insight – I may need a shovel to go along with that. I might have to dig deep.
- A dictionary or thesaurus to help me find the right words when I need them.
- Some smart, independent -type publishing people. Maybe we can teach each other a thing or two. It often goes both ways.
- A long lasting light bulb, for internal use, to illuminate my mind. A new socket might help too.
- Three strong signs – stop, go and proceed with caution. Send instructions along. I will read them so I know which sign to follow before I go down the wrong path.
- An energizer bunny to show me how to go on and on, so I can finish what I start.
- If you give me a gift card for these things, please make sure it does not have an expiration date. I may need these things, and you, longer than I think to get this job done.
P.S. Santa, if my requests are too great, please, no switches or coal. Just send my requests further north. Maybe we have the same boss and perhaps he can help us both out. Next year I will be back in touch. I promise I will work real hard with what you give me. When it is done, I want you to read my story and tell others what I did with the gifts. My requests, I hope, will be beneficial and fulfilling to you, too. Everyone needs a raise in life.
I’ll leave a carrot for the reindeer under the tree and something for you, too. Merry Christmas and have a Jolly New Year.

Independent publishers in Steamboat and the surrounding Routt County have good reason to celebrate this month. Our meet-up group, SHe Writes Steamboat has grown to include 29 members. We are fulfilling networking opportunity for independent publishers and fostering independent publishing success. Some members are first time publishers, others have several titles under their belt and many are working on new books. The group has been in existence since June 2011.
Last weekend we made a collaborative appearance at Holiday in the Rockies. This event was organized by the Steamboat Art Council. http://bit.ly/uJFXs7. SHe Writes Steamboat is also pleased to announce that our individual member’s publications are being considered by book clubs affiliated with the Bud Werner Library for reading in 2012.
If you are an independent publisher, male or female, in Routt County or in the surrounding counties looking for a meet-up group of this type, we invite you to join us at our monthly meetings. We meet every third Tuesday of the month from 4pm to 5:30pm. At a meeting two months ago, I brought the idea forward of joining in with World Book Night. SHe Writes Steamboat members were enthused. I submitted an application along with a short essay about why our community should be included in this event designed to encourage literacy among light or non-readers.
