“Some people are really drawn to technology and I liken them to artists.” ~ Mitchell Baker
I’m sorry but you can’t tell me that e-books are a passing fad. I read an article the other day that convinced me that we have only begun to realize the magnitude of advancing digital technology.
The article was about eight year old children who are learning computer code in schools. The article supports the importance of keeping school curriculum current and relevant with advancing technology and doing away with outdated ways of teaching and learning.
Young children are those who, in the future, will drive independent publishing and digital technologies to areas that we can adults can not even fathom. We can personally resist reading e-books and continue reading books in print, but the reality is that e-books are becoming a growing presence in our world. Electronic books are what the next generation of readers will want because they are so accustomed to using digital technology. In the end, it will become all about supply and demand.
To read more about Why Your Eight Year Old Should be Coding, here is the link.
http://bit.ly/Z39yLr .
It concerns me that if American schools do not have the resources to keep up with other countries, our workforce will be supplying products that people don’t even want or can not use and this country’s workers will not have skills that will be useful in business. Knowing how to write computer code will be an advantage for all kinds of careers in the future.

“Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way.” –
Florence Scovel Shinn
Last week at the TED conference, a two or three minute video clip of children talking about being were scared was aired. The children voiced their solutions of moving away from the emotive feelings that come with being scared by thinking of happy things – such as pizza, puppy dogs, pretty images.
How astute for young children to realize the value of visualization and to know the importance of the power of the brain to bring about change in our emotions.
In my opinion, raising perceptive children in this day and age is so important. Beyond teaching children they have the ability to change how they are feeling themselves, being well-tuned into our intuition can mean the difference between sensing if our safety is in jeopardy. This is useful for children and adults. A heightened sense of perception can also help steer children in the right direction in life, and aid them in having a strong moral compass.
A psychologist in one segment of the TED presentation spoke of the dangers of parents inhibiting a crucial developmental step in children by not letting children learn by their own mistakes and make their own decisions, within reason. As a person who has always been interested in psychology, this TED session was fascinating.
If you would like to learn more about raising intuitive children, check out this publication, available in e-book format, Raising Intuitive Children: Guide Your Children to Know and Trust their Gifts, http://amzn.to/161h1N6 , by authors Caron B Goode and Tara Paterson.

“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning,” ~ Benjamin Franklin
With each new generation of publishing software for e-books, options for typography, continues to expand. And as with any industry, there is language specific to that technology in the field.
Author Michael N Marcus’ book Typogr
aphy for Independent Publishers is a reference book that helps authors understand language such as fonts, serifs, outlining, embossing and other words that may be unfamiliar to those who are new to the publishing world.
Typography for e-books is quickly becoming an art. Since the initial offerings of e-books, readers are becoming more discriminating in what they want to see in e-books. Good layout, formatting and cover design is important for hard and soft cover publications and also for e-book buyers. Understanding typography terminology will help authors determine what they want to incorporate in their finished product.
No need to worry that you don’t have room for one more book on your bookshelf. Typography for Independent Publishers comes in e-book format, and it can be referenced from digital handheld devices from anyplace, anytime. Check it out!

“You can tap on a word to see what it means and you can make the words big or small.” ~ 9 year old girl, Virginia
The first quarter of 2013 will soon be coming to an end, and reports on book sales in 2012 have been complied and released from many sources. E-books continue to increase in popularity, as technology continues to offer improved products such as digital readers, and tablets.
According to The Kids and Family Reading Report, published by Scholastic, “as much of 46% percent of children have read an e-book.” They are being used more frequently in the classroom and for this tech savvy generation of children, e-books designs are incorporating interactive features that children like.
The Kindle Fire, a digital book reader had presales back in September 2011 of one million units per week. According to Dave Limp, V.P. of Amazon “Kindle Fire is the most successful product we’ve ever launched- it’s the bestselling product across all of Amazon for 11 straight weeks.”
Attached is an article from Venturebeat.com about e-book sales in 2012. I’ll let the information speak for itself, rather than try to interpret it for you. http://bit.ly/Zq5L8s .
Not convinced this is a fair assessment of the e-book market? Here are a few other articles which also cite a growing demand for digital books.
http://bit.ly/YkT2Dg
http://on.mash.to/Zq6YwO
From analyzing the reports, there is a healthy market for e-books. The growing use technology in our lives, an increased focus on sustainable, green living, the affordability of e-books and the ability to store books in a computer or handheld digital device rather than on bookshelves that take up space in rooms, in my opinion explain why e-book sales is a growing market.

There is always a moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in. ~ Graham Green
An objective of teaching is to prepare children to be academically strong. It is also important to give children other skills they will need so they grow to be well-rounded adults, able to cope with the stresses of life. Teaching professionals are increasingly being asked to add social and emotional learning into the classroom. Having the right tools and resources to add this modality of teaching, is important.
Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom: Promoting Mental Health and Academic Success by Kenneth W Merrell, PhD and Barbara A Gueldner, PhD is just one publication offered by Guilford Press, a publishing company focused on providing “books, periodicals, software, and DVDs in mental health, education, geography, and the social and behavioral sciences.”
A variety of teaching strategies, used in the classrooms, is offered in the book Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom: Promoting Mental Health and Academic Success. The book also addresses how to incorporate these social and emotional learning principles into curriculum and, how to adapt the program for classes that have a range of academic needs and cultural diversity.
Any learning program needs to be able to assess the program’s efficacy. This book also gives administrators and teachers ways to monitor progress and use the approaches outlined for utmost effectiveness.
Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom: Promoting Mental Health and Academic Success, published in February 2010, was released in e-book format in March 2011. Both formats can be ordered through the Guilford Press website. Please visit this link. http://bit.ly/YdGhKL .
Teachers, add this publication to your bookshelf, and watch your students reap the rewards of being emotionally and socially fit.

Co-author Barbara A Gueldner, PhD

“The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, achieves the impossible.” ~ Unknown
Sunday, February 25, 1973. I remember a note I wrote to myself that day back when I was in college. It said, “Finish reading Notes to Myself by Friday for psychology class.” The note was not kept in a cell phone, palm pilot or any other kind of digital device. It was written on a big paper calendar hanging on the wall in my dorm room.
The last sentence of Friday’s blog writing called Keeper of the Keys, stirred that memory. Scroll down to Friday’s blog if you have not read it or follow this link if you missed it.http://bit.ly/UXoiY9
In 1973, as a sophomore in college, the world was becoming my oyster. Full of wisdom, optimistic, I’d made it through my freshman year, with good grades. If I am not mistaken, I may have been on the Deans List.
Notes to Myself, a curriculum-required book for my psychology class helped me make an important decision. I thought, ”If being a psychology major meant reading other meaningful books like that, I was up for the task.” I hung on the words of Hugh Prather, the author of Notes to Myself, along with the thoughts of Maxwell Maltz, M.D, the author of Psycho-Cybernetics: A Way to Get More Living out of Life. Psych students, at that time, flung around words like psychoanalysis, existentialism and transcendental meditation.
Somewhere in my moves from apartment to apartment after college, my two bibles of thought were discarded. Since then they have been replaced by other personal development books introducing me to new ideas about this thing called personal fulfillment (or the art of living.)
Today, I’ve made a note to myself, in my hand-held digital device, to re-read Prather and Maltz’s books. This time, in electronic format (e-book versions) on a digital reader. Both have updated book covers!

“Joy isn’t in things, money or positions. It is IN us. And we need to bring it with us and SHARE it!” ~ Unknown
Day Two of 2013! My resolution this year is to do something a little different each month, to promote our growing population of independent publishers here in Routt County, Colorado.
Why? Because I believe greatly in each one of our We Write Steamboat, independent publishers. They are a creative and well-educated group of people, male and female. Many of them are award-winning authors with award-winning books! Each of them is a healer of mind, body and spirit! They have career knowledge in all sorts of fields. Our members include teachers, physicians, life consultants,a chef, holistic health consultants, experts on our natural environment, just to name a few. All with valuable experience in life to write about. Our group also includes young people and retirees who like to spin yarns just for the fun of it! (Of course, they don’t object to selling their books, also!)
In my opinion, all writers are helpers and healers of mind, body and spirit! After all, we publish books to educate, inspire others, entertain, and inform readers. Could there be better reasons? I don’t think so. In fact, writing is as therapeutic for the author as well as the reader. It gives us a way to share our thoughts, emotions, experiences and our imaginations. http://bit.ly/ZSk0Yc.
A networking group of independent publishers, She Writes Steamboat, that I began almost two years ago, has grown, and as of January 1, 2013 we have changed our name to We Write Steamboat. From the very first meeting, we have had male writers attend, and we don’t want them to feel slighted! We’ve welcomed them and have been delighted to have them part of the group from our inception.
We, independent publishers here in Ski Town, USA and Routt County, Colorado, come together and meet monthly. In a nutshell, because producing independent books, films and music is a win-win for the artist creating the work as well as for the audience who so enjoys it! Our mission is to provide networking opportunity and to promote success of independent publishing. Our affiliation with the Colorado Independent Publishers Association www.cipabooks.com , also fosters our growth as award-winning writers and publishers.
If you wish to learn more about starting up an independent publishing networking group in your area, contact me through this blog.

“As a kindergarten teacher, I have come to understand the powerful interplay between our senses, memory and food.” ~ Grady Turner
There is an e-book project in the works that I am more excited about than many others I have heard about. I desperately want to see it come to fruition. Why? This independent publishing project is about the new generation and teaching through interactive e-books.
Eat, Play, Learn Books, LLC is a company that is developing “kids activities that use healthy food as a learning tool.” These lessons have been successfully used and tested in the classroom by award winning kindergarten teacher, Grady Turner, B.A., MEd. They meet and reinforce academic standards.
The impetus behind this project is a need our country has – raising children who know about the benefits of staying healthy and fit. By donating to Kickstarter, you can help Eat, Play, Learn Books, LLC accomplish their mission. http://kck.st/UwXtgw. The funds raised through this campaign will be directly applied to the following “ EBook Design & Development – Video Production and Editing – EBook Photography – Book Cover Design – Website Design & Development – Various business expenses.”
This series published by Eat, Play, Learn Books, LLC covers four diciplines of learning – reading and writing, math, science and social studies. The e-books, complimented with video, will lead parents and children through a series of fun activities that reinforce healthy food choices. It is geared for children aged 4 to 9. The activities can be done at home, providing parents and children outstanding quality time together. Through the activities in the books, children are introduced food that is both nutritious and commonly found in homes and the grocery store.
Please take the time to watch the video posted on Kick Starter that shows an example of how these e-books bring together the objective of food, fun and learning. There is a special star in the video, so watch it with your children!
Electronic books published by Eat, Play Learn Books, LLC will be downloadable on e-readers, computers and palm-size digital devices, too – such as cell phones.

“What’s cheaper than a gallon of gas? An e-book. Save a dollar, stay home and read!”
~ Shandy L. Kurth
At the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair, there was a lot of discussion about the e-book industry. Digital books are gaining popularity globally. In fact, according to an article in Publishers Weekly Magazine, people in India top the charts as leaders in e-book buying. Thirty nine percent of the respondents to a survey say they have bought an e-book. Other top countries of digital book buyers are the United States and the United Kingdom. With each passing year, there is healthy growth in the electronic publishing industry, indicating an increased interest in digital reading content.
If you have ever had any doubt about whether Americans are consumed with buying books, volunteer at a donation center for a thrift shop. Three or four hours every Saturday, I help out in a donation center run by the local churches. The amount of books that come through the doors is astounding. Each week, I gain a greater understanding of the value of buying e-books.
Electronic books take up less space for one thing. For readers who read a book once and then get rid of it, the new generation of books makes more sense. Sure, the reading experience is a little different. There are no paper pages to turn or to dog-ear to mark a spot. But, the story is still the same whether we are reading it digitally, in a hardback version, paperback or listening to an audio book.
I am grateful the books have not ended up in the landfill and I know they are very much appreciated by the people who buy them. They are resold at a minimal price – usually 50 cents up to a few dollars. Sometimes a little more if the book is a large volume or a special collectible publication. Many of the donated books are in “like new” condition. Read once, then discarded.
If you would like to know more about this growing trend among publishers, please read this article. It is a good source of information, brought to you by Publisher’s Weekly Magazine, digitally. http://bit.ly/Trf7RF.

“Mistakes are portals of discovery.” ~ James Joyce
There is an interesting article in www.writermag.com about mistakes people make in e-book publishing. Putting forth quality e-books is very important to propelling the industry forward and changing stereo-typical opinions of the newest method in publishing.
Anymore, people are foregoing publishing books in-print and using electronic applications for putting their books into the marketplace. Sustainability factors and not wanting to have books sitting in warehouses and having to pay for the space, often factors into the equation when deciding to use an electronic publishing format. Not to mention profit margins.
According to Writer Magazine, there are 8 mistakes that are common among e-book publishers and they are as follows:
- Poorly designed book covers – nothing says “open me, buy me” better than a well designed cover. It is as equally important in electronic publications.
- Failing to spread the word – if you are selling over the internet, you MUST be marketing over the internet. That where you’ll find your potential book buyers.
- Publishing too quickly. Take time to have your book edited. It is part of offering a quality publication.
- Not being observant of what others e-book authors are doing. You can learn a lot by reading other’s e-books and picking up what a quality e-book looks like.
- Non-fiction writers, just because you have published an e-book does not mean that research is no longer needed. That is errant thinking!
- Limiting your options – there are many more e-book distributors than just through the Amazon channel.
- Going it alone. Network with other independent publishers to see what they are doing – share advice, support each other, surround yourself with others you can learn from.
- Impatience – many claim there is no money in e-book publishing before taking the time to utilize a full range of marketing tactics. It takes time and effort to build an audience!
If you are considering e-book publishing, go into it with some knowledge. Many libraries carry Writer Magazine, check out the article. Start out right by avoiding some common publishing mistakes people make in this new generation of publishing.
