“To have another language is to possess a second soul.” ~ Charlemagne
Note: Today’s blog is devoted to all beautiful soul building individuals in the family of man. The message below, in red and black, is a reminder that the fabric of the world’s population is so interesting due our diversity as individuals, woven together, living on one planet.
I am a very proud aunt! I have five nieces, and two nephews, not even including two more lovely nieces on my husband’s side of the family. There’s not
a bad apple in the bunch of them; each has a unique personality and career choice so different than each of their cousins. All are in their twenties, except the youngest who will be off to college, in September, with ambitions of becoming a veterinarian specializing in horses.
In a few short days, one of my nieces will be going to Japan to teach English as a second language. Wisely, she has chosen to travel abroad for an extended period, now, while she is young, with few encumbrances. She will be working at a very reputable school, has an apartment arranged, and is up for the challenge. Her personality traits, I believe, are well suited to the task. She is very resourceful and a beautiful soul building individual.
According to an article published by Cornell University, there are many benefits of elevating the spirits and minds of children by teaching them a second language. To read the full article, please go to http://bit.ly/VMI4WT
Not to put pressure on her or anything, but, I hope she will start a blog; she is a fantastic writer. I would love to see photos and learn, from this side of the world, about her experiences in the classroom, as well as more about Japanese art, history and other interesting cultural information that she encounters.
I love and will miss my dear niece, and I hope it will not be too long before I see her again. But, I know it will be a fulfilling experience. She’ll grow, as a person, as a result of sharing her talents with children abroad.
”Ki wo tsuketekudasai”!

“As a kindergarten teacher, I have come to understand the powerful interplay between our senses, memory and food.” ~ Grady Turner
There is an e-book project in the works that I am more excited about than many others I have heard about. I desperately want to see it come to fruition. Why? This independent publishing project is about the new generation and teaching through interactive e-books.
Eat, Play, Learn Books, LLC is a company that is developing “kids activities that use healthy food as a learning tool.” These lessons have been successfully used and tested in the classroom by award winning kindergarten teacher, Grady Turner, B.A., MEd. They meet and reinforce academic standards.
The impetus behind this project is a need our country has – raising children who know about the benefits of staying healthy and fit. By donating to Kickstarter, you can help Eat, Play, Learn Books, LLC accomplish their mission. http://kck.st/UwXtgw. The funds raised through this campaign will be directly applied to the following “ EBook Design & Development – Video Production and Editing – EBook Photography – Book Cover Design – Website Design & Development – Various business expenses.”
This series published by Eat, Play, Learn Books, LLC covers four diciplines of learning – reading and writing, math, science and social studies. The e-books, complimented with video, will lead parents and children through a series of fun activities that reinforce healthy food choices. It is geared for children aged 4 to 9. The activities can be done at home, providing parents and children outstanding quality time together. Through the activities in the books, children are introduced food that is both nutritious and commonly found in homes and the grocery store.
Please take the time to watch the video posted on Kick Starter that shows an example of how these e-books bring together the objective of food, fun and learning. There is a special star in the video, so watch it with your children!
Electronic books published by Eat, Play Learn Books, LLC will be downloadable on e-readers, computers and palm-size digital devices, too – such as cell phones.
Please join me in supporting this wonderful publishing project. Any amount, big or small will be greatly appreciated. Do it for America’s children! The Kickstarter fundraising ends Friday, November 23, 2012. http://kck.st/UwXtgw.

“If one looks closely enough, one can see angels in every piece of art.
~ Terri Guillemets
“Mama, Do you Love Me?” Yes, I do sweet child! “More than a walrus loves his tusks,” I would recite. Barbara M. Joosse’s lyrical story, “Mama, Do You Love Me?” offered the perfect opportunity to teach my son about the unconditional love a mother has for a child along with learning about the Inuit culture and Artic wildlife, too.
With my child, I read a staggering number of enticing and magnificent children’s books as he went through the years of growing up. Because reading together was not something either of us was willing to let go of, I had the privilege of reading to him daily until almost age 12. It was the most treasured and fulfilling part of our evening routine.
Children have a natural ability to learn language. The importance of reading to a child and talking with them, even about simple things, can not be overstated. It is how a child builds a solid vocabulary for understanding the world around them and how they learn to communicate effectively with others. For more information on this topic, check out this article http://bit.ly/np1Xzh.
The most fulfilling Christmas shopping I did each year was stepping inside the Publishers Weekly award-winning Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont. Picking out the most meaningful books I could find for my child, I knew my buying helped to support a top-notch independent bookstore. I also loved the mission of their Book Angel program which put worthwhile books into the hands of many underserved children in the State of Vermont. http://conta.cc/txlh5s.
As far as I was concerned, the best gifts given to my child at any time of year were new books or DVDs. Besides Legos, books and films were always his most prized holiday presents. They were gifts that kept on giving for many years. The money spent became a real investment in my child’s future, too.
Come on back tomorrow. Since I am in the reminiscing mode, I will share a list of my favorite children’s books, published in the 1980’s that “Santa” gave my child over the years. It may help out with some last minute shopping ideas.
More independent, thoughts, words and views from www.CornerstoneFulfillmentService.com tomorrow! Come on back!

“The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of the past centuries.” ~ Descartes
International Literacy Day is just around the corner. Here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado two literary events are planned for September 9th and September 10th. On Friday, September 9th, the meet-up group SHe Writes Steamboat is hosting the Colorado Independent Publishers Association for an event open to the public at the Bud Werner Memorial Library. www.steamboatlibrary.org.
The event will be fulfilling a need for education about publishing options including the dynamic, growing industry of independent publishing and e-books. Non-traditional publishing (independent publishing) now represents over 50% of all publishing revenue and it is providing a more sustainable way to publish. For more information on the event, please go to http://bit.ly/pdUNxz.
On Saturday, September 10th the 18th annual Literary Sojourn http://bit.ly/pMfxl9 will be held at the Sheraton Hotel Resort in Steamboat. More than 500 readers arrive yearly from all over the country to attend this celebration. Notable authors in attendance this year will include: Jennifer Egan, Peter Matthiessen, Paula McLain, Julie Orringer, Jim Shepard and Julia Glass. The Literary Sojourn typically sells out early.
On September 8th, communities around the globe will recognize this International Literacy Day by bringing awareness to others that there are many who can not read. In fact:
- One in 6 Adults are Illiterate
- 67.4 million children do not attend school or have dropped out
- 796 million adults lack minimum reading skills
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and their partners such as reading associations and libraries are promoting this day with literacy day projects. This year there is special emphasis on technology paired with literacy.
Check to see if there are any special events to celebrate UNESCOs International Day of Literary at your local library. Or become involved, as a concerned citizen, to raise people’s awareness that high rates of literacy build strong societies and a better, more sustainable and peaceful world.

This generation of digitally obsessed students has challenged educators to find different ways of hooking kids into learning. How to teach lessons through multi-media, that will keep kids tuned in, is an on-going discussion among educators everywhere.
There is a full service independent publishing and production company, Bluewater Productions, developing educational content by combining innovative storytelling through comic books with high quality art.
Science fiction, greek mythology as well as biographical stories of authors, super heroes, politicians, notable women and Hollywood legends are all incorporated into the comic book publications of Bluewater Productions. The company aims to publish a fresh generation of educationally fulfilling comic books that will stimulate young minds. For more information on the library and literary initiatives that Bluewater Productions have been involved with, please visit http://bit.ly/oovpvC.
The company has full service art and design studios and employs over 200 freelance artists and writers from around the world from a mix of media specialty fields. Their client list includes big name film studios such as Dreamworks, Lionsgate, Sony and New Line Cinema.
How to motivate students to be active learners is a subject of great debate among parents and teachers, everywhere. John Lubbock once said “The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.” In this 21st century, teaching goes far, far beyond textbook learning. Reaching children and inspiring them to learn in new creative ways is a difficult and challenging task.

Tonight is Poetry Night at the White House. The President and Mrs. Obama are hosting some of the most prominent contemporary poets of our time. The poets were recognized for the influence they have had on today’s American culture. The poetry event also includes an afternoon workshop designed to educate children on the art of poetry.
Like opera and ballet, poetry is not always recognized for the beautiful art form that it is. This form of writing is not fully appreciated or understood by many. To fully comprehend poetry is to understand all that goes into the writing of it – the use of diction, syntax, imagery, irony, symbolism, connotations and more. An accomplished poet incorporates many of these writing complexities into their written piece.
Sometimes, a poet’s work is not made public until after their death. Many poets are “closet writers” and never intend to publish their work. Poetry fulfills a need to express innermost feelings and emotions. It is used as a channel for soul searching and release. Because deep-seated emotions and difficulties in personal lives are often reflected in poetry writing, many poets are uncomfortable with revealing their vulnerabilities, and decide to keep their compositions private. The pick of words can sometimes bring distressing feelings to the reader too.
In a town that seems to thrive on debate, even last night’s White House literary event was not without controversy. The invitation of a successful Chicago poet and rapper brought criticism. His work has been a source of contention due to the choice of words he uses in his poetry. For more information about this controversial poet, visit http://bit.ly/mKy7eQ.
Perhaps William Butler Yeats said it best about poetry “We make out of the quarrel with others, rhetoric, but of the quarrel with ourselves, poetry.”

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”~ B.B. King
Attention children’s book authors, illustrators and publishers! There is an organization that offers consultation and critique of unpublished manuscripts to help you publish a quality finished product. The American Children’s Book Society fulfills their mission to help produce and market “superior and meaningful children’s books.” Their services include:
- Critique program
- Book Review program
- “A” Rating program
- Consulting and Coaching
By working with the American Children’s Book Society, Inc. http://www.americanchildrensbooksociety.com/ your book will be reviewed for quality content, perhaps giving you an inroad to selling to schools and libraries. Because your book has been critiqued by the American Book Society, you will also have the advantage of entering your book into the annual “Scooter Awards” and the possibility of earning an “A” rank in their rating program.
The panel of judges on the American Children’s Book Society, Inc. looks for compliance with all CPSIA regulations and rules including quality of design, suitability of content, presentation and pricing for retail markets. For all first-time authors/publishers who are unfamiliar with standards in children’s book compliance, this organization provides excellent services and gives you the tools to provide a quality children’s book to the industry.

“My spelling is Wobbly. It’s good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.” ~ A. A. Milne
Hey, we are on our way! On our way to becoming a town of not only of well-read people, but a town of great spellers, too! Last summer Steamboat Reads was a community-wide program which engaged people of all ages in reading and discussing one of the classic books of all time “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
This Saturday kicked off the 1st annual Spelling Bee contest, sponsored by Aging Well http://bit.ly/enTmIc and other groups. There was one, very important rule to this contest – there had to be a person aged 60 or older on every single team.
I am proud to announce one of my pals from the Yampa Valley University Women, was on the winning team! There are all kinds of things, being in a club with these well-educated, and in many cases, well-traveled women bring to my world – including sharing their life experiences and their varied interests with me!
We are so fortunate to have in our town, a library that is the envy of so many other towns, both near and far. The new Bud Werner Library offers book clubs, literary sojourns, a great children’s room and even a fabulous Library Hall for screening PBS films, and more. It is no wonder, things like spelling bees and writing groups, for authors of all ages and genres have cropped up, here and there about town. There is an avid interest in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for all things literary and Art!
For a company that serves the independent publishing industry, it’s a good place to be! The word is quickly spreading to places all over the world, exactly what a community of people that are interested in books, films, music and the Arts, in general, can bring to a town’s vibrancy.
