International Need for Children’s Books

April 2, 2012

There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” ~ Jacqueline KennedyThanks go out to my friend Vesna, in the country of Macedonia, for bringing my attention to the importance of this day in children’s literature.

Beloved author Hans Christian Anderson was born in Odense, Demark on this day, April 2nd, in 1805. His books for children have been translated in more than 150 languages. Some of his best known titles include:

  • The Ugly Duckling
  • The Little Mermaid
  • The Snow Queen
  • Thumbelina
  • The Little Match Girl
  • The Steadfast Tin Soldier

In Zurich, Switzerland in 1953, in honor of the birthday of Hans Christian Anderson, a non-profit organization, The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) was formed to encourage and promote children’s literature worldwide. This organization has been active in fulfilling the need for quality publications to children in developing countries. The International board of this organization includes authors, publishers, illustrators, booksellers, journalists, translators. Even parents, social workers and teachers comprise the list of people dedicated to bring literacy to children with few resources.

Each year The Hans Christian Anderson Awards are given to authors whose books support the mission of the excellence in children’s literature. To read more about the 2012 winners, announced last month, and for additional information about The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), please follow this link. www.ibby.org.

29 Cities of Creative Industry

March 19, 2012

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes time. Vision with action can change the world! ~ Joel Arthur Barker

Today, we are returning to a subject we shared on Saturday, St. Patrick’s Day – UNESCO’s designated Cities of Creative Industries. There are 29 cities that play integral roles in developing new technologies in publishing, cinema, design, culinary arts, music and crafts. Opportunity for opening up new prospects for globalization of exchange, cultural diversity and economic development has put these cities in the lead:

There are many reasons urban hubs are identified by UNESCO as outstanding places for creative industry including excellent libraries and bookstores along with their experience in hosting festivals and literary events. The promotion and preservation of foreign literature and cities with publishing houses also make them top contenders. Existing educational arts programs and initiatives and the involvement with new media also  may qualify a destination for the international dimensions that UNESCO is looking  for. To read more information on the Creative Industries Network, please visit this link http://bit.ly/wX0CNg.

At the local level, there are many small cities across the globe that are looking at their own arts and culture as ways to bring more tourists and economic development, including where I live –Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Visitors from all over the globe come here to experience the natural beauty in a mountain resort. While they are here, tourists want to gain an appreciation for  fulfilling things that are found in the Art of the West.

Irish City of Literature

March 17, 2012

A loyal blog reader sent me this interesting idea for consideration for a blog writing subject. Today, I would like to thank Marie  from Australia for passing along this important and timely tidbit of information for St. Patrick’s Day.

Did you know in 2010, Dublin was named a UNESCO City of Literature? It is well justified. There are many Irish writers from long ago whose legacies have continued to live on.

Novelist and poet, James Joyce is just one of them. His major works include Dublineers(1914), Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegan’s Wake (1939). Other notable writers from the Emerald Isle include:

  • W B Yeats (1865-1939)
  • Jonathan Swift (1667-1745)
  • Samuel Beckett (1906 – 1989)
  • Sean O’Casey (1880-1964)
  • Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900)
  • Patrick Kavanagh (1904 – 1967)

Although, these writers are from centuries gone by, there are contemporary Irish writers who are continuing the tradition of providing literature with excellent content.

The daughter of Ireland’s Prime Minister, Cecelia Ahern is well on her way to fame. Walt Disney Pictures has bought film rights to her book If You Could See Me Now. I look forward to seeing how the film adaptation brings together the elements of fantasy and thoughtful dialogue into a fulfilling mix.

Now partway through Cecelia Ahern’s book, I found an Irish proverb, by an unknown author, that could be applied to the theme of this book.

As you slide down the banister of life,
May the splinters never point in the wrong direction!”

If You Could See Me Now  is available as an e-book. Readers, if you find connections between this wonderful Irish proverb and some of the internal conflicts in this book, send me comment on this blog. I’m interested whether your interpretations match mine. Let’s start an interesting discussion on this site.

Sending Irish blessings your way on this March 17th. Join us on Monday. We will explore other cities that have been designated as a UNESCO City for Creative Industry, and the characteristics these cities have to fulfill the requirements.

Steamboat Selected for World Book Night

February 21, 2012

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” ~Sir Richard Steele

This is the third Tuesday of  February. A lot of independent publishers in this town know exactly what that means. It is time for our monthly meet-up group to gather and network about all things independent publishing here in Steamboat Springs,Colorado.

For those who may not be able to attend our get together at 4:00pm today, I am going to release some important news.

I am so pleased to announce that Steamboat Springs, Colorado has been chosen as a select community to be involved with UNESCO’s World Book Night on April 23rd.

At a meeting two months ago, I brought the idea forward of joining in with World Book Night.  SHe Writes Steamboat members were enthused.  I submitted an application  along with a short essay about why our community should be included in this event designed to encourage literacy among light or non-readers.

The organizers of World Book Night have determined that  Steamboat Springs, Colorado is a community that values literacy , reading and writing. We will be included in this world-wide event.

Thank you in advance to members of SHe Writes Steamboat who have volunteered to participate on the night of April 23rd. More information will follow soon about the title of the book our members will be distributing in our town and the organizations that will benefit from this literacy event.

If you are interested in becoming a member of SHe Writes Steamboat, join us this afternoon at 4pm at City Café on 10th Street. Or  email me at SheWritesSteamboat@gmail.com. We will add you as a Facebook friend of SHe Writes Steamboat.

Answering the Call

October 26, 2011

The idea of a sacred place…is apparently as old as life itself.” ~Joseph Campbell

We have a winner! On September 2, I wrote a blog which was a follow-up of Glassworks Inspired by Nature, the most frequently read blog on All Things Fulfilling of all time. I put out a challenge to our readers, to send in a suggestion of a beautiful building that incorporates history, architecture and outstanding glass installations. My hope was that the choice would educate me and our readers about an awe-inspiring structure that is in a far off part of the world.

Marie, sent in her suggestion of the Chartres Cathedral, located inParis,France. It well fit the bill! This sacred UNESCO World Heritage site was constructed between the years 1193 and 1250. It is considered one of the finest examples of French High Gothic Style in the world.

Not only is the building of great historical value, millions of people visit the Cathedral because of a relic that sits inside the doors. The Sancta Camisa, the tunic believed to have been worn by the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the time of Christ’s birth was acquired by the Cathedral in c.876 and it is on display. The indoor labyrinth is of great interest, too.

The church has seen fire damage to the structure and to the vivid stained glass windows, installed throughout. The French Revolution and World War II also took a toll. But many of the original glass installations are still intact. From an art historical viewpoint, the Cathedral, inside and out, has been preserved magnificently.

Not only is the building  notable for it’s history, architectural elements and for the exquisite glass installations, it is a sacred place for worship for tourists who come from around the world, each and every year. To read more about this fascinating shrine, please visit http://www.sacred-destinations.com/france/chartres-cathedral.

Thank you, Marie, for answering the call and for being a loyal visitor to this blog site. Contributions from readers like you make blogging all the more fulfilling.

Steamboat Supporting Literacy

September 1, 2011

The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of the past centuries.” ~ Descartes

International Literacy Day is just around the corner.  Here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado  two literary events are planned for September 9th and September 10th.  On Friday, September 9th, the meet-up group SHe Writes Steamboat is hosting the Colorado Independent Publishers Association for an event open to the public at the Bud Werner Memorial Library. www.steamboatlibrary.org.

The event will be fulfilling a need for education about publishing options including the dynamic, growing industry of independent publishing and e-books. Non-traditional publishing (independent publishing) now represents over 50% of all publishing revenue and it is providing a more sustainable way to publish. For more information on the event, please go to http://bit.ly/pdUNxz

On Saturday, September 10th  the 18th annual Literary Sojourn http://bit.ly/pMfxl9   will be held at the Sheraton Hotel Resort in Steamboat. More than 500 readers arrive yearly from all over the country to attend this celebration. Notable authors in attendance this year will include: Jennifer Egan, Peter Matthiessen, Paula McLain, Julie Orringer, Jim Shepard and Julia Glass. The Literary Sojourn typically sells out early.

On September 8th, communities around the globe will recognize this International Literacy Day by bringing awareness to others that there are many who can not read. In fact:

  • One in 6 Adults are Illiterate
  • 67.4 million children do not attend school or have dropped out
  • 796 million adults lack minimum reading skills

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and their partners such as reading associations and libraries are promoting this day with literacy day projects. This year there is special emphasis on technology paired with literacy.

Check to see if there are any special events to celebrate UNESCOs International Day of Literary at your local library. Or become involved, as a concerned citizen, to raise people’s awareness that high rates of literacy build strong societies and a better, more sustainable and peaceful world.

All for Tourism

January 24, 2011

Diversity is the magic… the first beginning of the differentiation of a thing and of simple identity.” ~ Thomas Berry

Did you visit our blog posting last week entitled “All for the People”? If not, scroll down to the blog dated Jan 18, and read it because it was one of our most popular blog postings on All Things Fulfilling, of all time. In short, it concerns “A Space for Faith,” an award-winning photographic book about colonial meetinghouses.

Although, in the book, photographer Paul Wainwright shares images of some of the earliest places for town meetings and religious congregation in our country, we have to put the historic reference into perspective, when we consider how relatively new our country really is. Compared to many of the homes and buildings built in Europe and in places like Macedonia, the colonial meetinghouses of New England are considered modern architecture!

Macedonia, a tiny country in the Balkan region, is very rich in ancient culture. In one town in this country alone, there were 365 churches. At one time, the city of Ohrid, Macedonia had enough places for religious congregation that you could visit a different one every day of the year.  This town, which sits on the deepest lake in the world, was named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Scientific & Cultural Organization).

This town knows a lot about hospitality. It has visitors from all over the globe every year. It is fulfilling a need for those around the world wanting to know more about ancient civilizations and world heritage. For more information on Macedonia, please visit http://bit.ly/bv7IMb. What a wonderful place to vacation and gain an education, all at the same time!
