“Each day I am thankful for; nights turned into morning, friends that turned into family, dreams that turned into reality and likes that turned into love.” ~ Ritu Ghatourey
I’ve been swept up in a whirlwind of fulfilling things since arriving on the East Coast. It all began with attending a social event of a book club group with women who reside in and around the historic area surrounding TaylorsIsland in Dorchester County, Maryland. The Grace Foundation is restoring churches and doing work on the island to preserve the history of the churches and schoolhouses. http://bit.ly/16Ezcex.
“The Postmistress” by Sarah Blake, a book I recently read and adored, is on the reading booklist for the book club for this coming summer. Based on a small town sea-side community during World War 2, the post office was a hub of activity, and the spinster postmistress knows secrets which if told, will change the lives of some of the residents. If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it.
Then I traveled to the Boston area to attend the beautiful wedding of our niece on my husband’s side of the family. It was so wonderful to see the bride and her sister (our second Leonard niece), who are now both married adults.
We also spent a lovely evening in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and had dinner at Loretta’s. The harbor area in Newburyport has changed greatly since last time I visited many years ago. Full of wonderful restaurants with varied cuisine, we also went art gallery hopping. As a Mother’s Day present, my husband bought me a New England artisan-crafted necklace from Annie’s of Newburyport. Then we finished the evening with dessert at a fantastic coffee shop complete with musical entertainment featuring a sole independent musician playing the guitar.
Join me tomorrow on my journey back to Vermont, my state of residence for more than thirty years. I was greeted by “Miss America” of the independent publishing industry! She’s quite a package! Well-built, for future developments.
Here are just a few pictures from my fulfilling travels:

Your work is to discover your work and then, with all your heart, to give yourself to it. ~ Unknown
As a representative of We Write Steamboat and a volunteer for World Book Night, I stopped by the Colorado State University Extension of Routt County http://bit.ly/16qQLxr to give out The Language of Flowers to volunteers in the agriculture department.
I took time to explain to the recipients that the mission of the World Book Night is to spread a love of literacy and I also gave them a brief history of the organization.
We purposely waited until May Day to give out a portion of the books from World Book Night to this group because a gathering of CSU Extension volunteers had just completed their Master Gardeners program, and were holding a breakfast burrito fundraiser.
When given the book, gratefulness was the overriding sentiment for a publication that so well-suited the volunteers interests. A few people I gave books to worked in another part of the office building, but were there to support the fundraiser and get breakfast. One person walked out with me as I left, and said “I have to get back to work, but I can’t wait to peak between the covers!” I had explained to her that there was a glossary at the back of the book that lists flowers and the emotions that are associated with each. During the Victorian period, giving flowers communicated feelings in relationships, the art of choosing an “appropriate flower” was very important.
My hope, as a World Book Volunteer, is that The Language of Flowers will help the volunteers of CSU Agriculture Department learn a fascinating new aspect about plants they had known little about before.
Happy Reading CSU Volunteers! I hope the snow we received on May Day disappears quickly so you can get out in the gardens and enjoy planting your passion!

Happy May Day, everyone! Did you read yesterday’s blog about Dallas Clayton? He’s been acclaimed as “the next Dr. Seuss,” and his success has come out of his decision to rely on his own creativity to make a living and by taking a leap of faith.
This image on my blog today, is for anyone who will be starting a new endeavor. Relate to the words above? If so, they are meant for you. We all need words of encouragement as we travel the path of life and wonder if we are doing the right thing.
My hope in posting this quote is that you will find all things fulfilling in your decisions. Usually tasks are placed in our hands because someone else believes in us. Move forward with confidence, you have what it takes to be successful. http://bit.ly/15SuKaV.
Understand for whom this message intended. Wonderful YOU! And remember, ”Have patience to walk with short steps until you learn to fly.” ~ St. Francis de Sales

“Go confidently in your dreams, live the life you have imagined.” ~ David Henry Thoreau
Have you heard the inspiring story of Dallas Clayton? The author who is being touted as the next Dr. Seuss?
From his interview on the Jeff Probst show the other day, he revealed that he was a person without direction in his life until he became a father and decided to write a book for his son. The rest is history. He wrote an outstanding narrative that children could well relate to, and he discovered he had art talent and could do his own illustrations, also.
His first book, An Awesome Book of Love, which came out of wanting to communicate his love for his child, sold like wildfire. This print-on-demand title kept selling out. Eventually, he was contacted by large, mainstream publishing house, and they offered him 10%. His response to that was “Why should I sign a deal like that? I am already making 100%.” Long and short of the story – he was eventually offered a “sweet deal,” which allowed him to start a foundation for literacy “The Awesome World Foundation.” http://www.veryawesomeworld.com/.
Clayton said, in his interview with Jeff Probst, one of the biggest benefits that came with writing the book for his son, who was five when the first book was published, is that “his son saw what it takes to author and publish a book.” He saw his Dad involved in the entire process of the business - writing, illustrating, making mock-up books and even shipping the books from their living room when he needed a fulfillment company. Clearly, an eye-opening experience for a child who probably thinks books magically appear on library bookshelves. And it all began with independent publishing and taking a leap of faith.
I love these kinds of success stories!

We shouldn’t teach great books, we should teach a love of reading. ~ B.F. Skinner
World Book Night was yesterday. As a representative of our local independent publishers networking group, We Write Steamboat, I was a Book Giver. Our group received a box of free books from the organizers of WBN titled The Language of Flowers.
I visited a senior citizen’s housing complex that offers a small collection of books for it’s residents. I also stopped by the Doak Walker Care Center, an “Eden Alternative Home” for senior living. It has the distinction of having national recognition, and it also houses a small library for its residents. I added to each of their acquisitions. http://bit.ly/XUp3EG. My next stop was the Steamboat Community Center where seniors go for a noontime meal, and passed out some free books there.
A group of people who will be volunteering their time to ready a community garden for planting as soon as the weather is conducive, will also be the recipients of the book.Right now, the ground is still frozen and there is still snow in northwest Colorado. The title will be appealing to their interests.
The mission of World Book Night is to promote literacy. There were 6,000 towns and cities and 25,000 volunteers who participated in yesterday’s event which began in the United Kingdom two years ago. To read more about this growing organization, please visit http://www.us.worldbooknight.org .
I enjoy being involved with this event because it feels good to give to others in the community. If you live in an area where accessibility to good books is a problem, sign up to be a Book Giver next year and help distribute donated titles to your own town or city.
The objective is that when the recipients are finished with the book, if they do not want to keep the book for their home library, they will pass it along to someone else who find personal fulfillment from reading it. Happy Reading!

Change your thoughts, change your life. ~ Unknown
A Literary Teabox! I like that idea – something to dig into when creativity is low and a pick-me up is needed.
The box is stuffed with things that help stir and brew up inspiration – combination treasure trove and fortune cookie, less the calories and carbohydrates.
Don’t get it? See the box – what’s in it? Words of wisdom – “quotable quotes” from all kinds of people.
Make your own literary teaboxes as gifts. Keep it creative and loose so it will be meaningful to friends with different passions. A thoughtful, inspirational gift for writers or other artists, self-improvement junkies, sports enthusiasts. Want to learn more about using affirmations for positive change, please visit this website http://bit.ly/XkUS9l.
Add instructions for how to use with best results: When you awake, open the box and read a quote. Let it brew and steep as you think about the hours ahead. Then let the words invigorate you and infuse you with energy. Go about your day in a fulfilling kind of way. Happy Monday!

“Finding out what a community will enjoy, support and get behind takes expertise.” ~Larry Smith
It’s April and you know what that means. World Book Night is just around the corner. This year, our independent publishing meet-up group, We Write Steamboat, will be distributing The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbach. We have selected a group of people to give these books to who speak the same language and who will really appreciate the publication. More about that later , as World Book Night approaches.
Part of the business of being an independent publisher is to sell books and locate communities of people, all over the world, who have a common interest in the genre of writing or the subject that you write about. Non-fiction is generally easier to market, but fiction writers who approach their writing with goals of appealing to certain demographic groups, find the marketing part easier and even pleasurable. If you are selling your publication over the internet, through e-commerce, e-marketing (on-line promotion) using social media, is a critical part of it. It is very important to learn how to use social media effectively because without some knowledge of what you are trying to accomplish, your efforts could be for naught.
If you are a person who is new to independent publishing through e-commerce and e-marketing, its wise to put a little investment into hiring a professional to help you identify your markets and learn how to reach out to effectively to find people on-line with common interests. Look for a company that specializes in e-commerce and e-marketing for independent publishers.

“Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the window which hope has opened” ~ Charles Spurgeon

To many people around the world, preparing for Easter means more than shopping for Peeps™ candy, jelly beans, chocolate eggs and other confections. Spring is the season of renewal of spirit. For people of faith, that means remembering the Easter story of biblical times – a tale of crucifiction, death, resurrection and life.
On this Film Friday, I have resurrected a list of the top ten Easter movies of all times. Although Easter is several weeks away, perhaps your family would enjoy receiving one of these films in their Easter basket. I am posting this list early so you can add one of these DVDs to your shopping cart. Many of them are considered to be epic productions and can be located, and your order can be fulfilled through the Internet Movie Database www.imdb.com :
- Passion of Christ (2004)
- The Robe (1953)
- Ben Hur (1959)
- Holiday Inn (1942)
- Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
- King of Kings (1961)
- The Easter Parade (1948)
- Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
- Jesus of Nazareth (1977)
- The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)
It’s interesting, as I was doing research for this blog I noticed that most of these films were produced decades ago. Is it true that the American people have fallen out of favor with the one of the cornerstone principles that our country was founded upon, faith? Is that why contemporary filmmakers are not approaching religious subjects? I’d like to think not, and Reelz is offering outstanding programming over the Easter Season.
Barabbas: Where the Bible Left off…His Story of Redemption Began, a Reelz Easter Event, premiers Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26. Part I of the mini-series, featuring Billy Zane, will be broadcast on the night of March 30 and Part II on March 31. “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” ~ Marcel Proust
Friday’s blog on All Things Fulfilling was a tribute to friendship and the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
I’ve had have further thoughts about the value of friends since that blog writing. Coming together in friendship is the result of finding community with like-minded people – individuals who have joint interests, passions and beliefs in life. In recent years I’ve made friends in service, through Kiwanis, and by volunteering once a week at an interfaith, community-run thrift store called “Lift-Up.” Being involved with arts organizations such as We Write Steamboat(a meet-up group for independent publishers), the Steamboat Writers Group , the Colorado Independent Publishers Association and Strings Music Festival has brought me pleasure. Community involvement, with the Yampa Valley University Women has also been part of my life here in Routt County, Colorado.
It’s interesting, in a time when the news is reporting church membership is declining, there seems to be very active participation in churches, in this town. Perhaps the remote location and natural beauty of the region make spiritual exploration important to folks. Yesterday, Reverend Tim at the UnitedMethodistChurch in Steamboat, elevated our spirits through his lenten season storytelling. Our new Director of Youth Ministry and independent musician, Taylor Anderson charmed us with his musical skills playing the modern remix of ”Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on his ukulele. Very uplifting for a day of Irish celebration. A song appropriate for so many who are grateful they can be here to retire, run location-neutral businesses or for recreational reasons.
After the service, our appetites were fulfilled with tasty goodies baked by women with whom I volunteer at the thrift store donation center. Thank you, Jeanette, Shirley and Louise and to all the other generous people who bring in provisions for fellowship moments after the service each week. The special St. Patty’s Day confections were decorated artistically. The women poured heart and soul into their efforts, it was evident. It is a pleasure to volunteer with these women at the donation center for the thrift store.

“The best blush to use is laughter: It puts roses in your cheeks and in your soul.” ~Linda Knight
It has been said kissing a stone can have the effect of giving someone the “gift of gab?” Did you know that? Could be true, I suppose. After all, Winston Churchill visited the Blarney Stone in 1912 and he became one of best orators ever.
Do you think there is any validity to the theory? I am not sure. After all, there have been people for hundreds of years who have kissed and vividly told. People have bent over backwards just to get a smooch, and paid a price to do it, too. Yet, they’ve never been to Ireland.. ..
Case in point: I have a friend who can talk up a storm, her name is Chatter. She’d tell you herself, back in her wild and crazy years as a college student, ”she kissed many stones she’s walked on after a few too many green ales on St. Pattys Day.” She’d say “she’s conversed face to face with plenty of frogs, too.” If she tells you ”She got her ‘gift of gab’ from the famous Irish landmark,” it isn’t so. She’s always been full of Blarney.”
Her Irish heritage, has given her genes to enjoy being the life of the party and be resilient too. She can find the humor in all situations, including health issues. God blessed me with her friendship, she’s one of my dearest friends. In my heart of hearts, I hope some day, I get to visit Ireland with her to fulfill one of our wishes and start a new chapter, called Active Retirement! Then we will have even more stories to tell about our forty plus years of friendship, filled with laughter.
As an early St. Patty’s Day greeting, I’d like to send out blessings to all my friends and family.
I-rish you a very nice place to live,
I-rish God’s greatest gifts he’ll give.
I-rish you health, and wealth, and more–
I-rish your smilin’ face were at my door! ~ unknown

May the luck of the Irish be with you today, and every day! Peace, love and a whole Lot more!
