“Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.” ~ Frank Borman
My travelogue of Newport, Rhode Island continues today. I had the opportunity to tour the Marble House, one of the mansions. High up on the Cliff Walk, overlooking Rhode Island sound and the Atlantic Ocean, it was home to the Vanderbilts who made their fortune as venture capitalists in the NY Central Railroad and steamships. Their investments and other wealthy families foresight in our country’s future, brought more prosperity through expanding commerce.
The opulent stone palace, now a National Historic Landmark, was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and was constructed during the years 1888-1892. Once complete, it was a 39th birthday present to William K Vanderbilt’s wife, Alva. How do you wrap a present like that? In gold, of course, inside, rather than out. She loved to entertain and saw the Marble House as “her temple to the Arts in America.”
Husband and wife, had separate private reading rooms filled with books, on opposite sides of the mid-level landing of the enormous, two story marble stair case. It is where they went to get away, relax from all their social entertaining. They also built a Chinese teahouse on the property with a magnificent view where guests could go for peace and solitude away from the hustle and bustle of the Marble House activities.
Alva and William K Vanderbilt had three children. Their son, William K, Jr. was a pioneer in auto racing. Their son, Harold pursued his passion of yachting and sailed in the America’s Cup three times. Their daughter Consuelo became the 9th Duchess of Marlborough.
Photos are not allowed to be taken inside the mansion. To read more about the Marble House and to see a photo of the gold room in the Marble House, please visit this link. http://www.newportmansions.org/explore/marble-house.
It was a fulfilling weekend in New England, exploring art, history and architecture.

Goodbye, Newport! Can’t believe we saw all these sites in Newport in one day. Well worth the stop!
Signed, Grateful, that I returned to this area once again. Loved every minute!

“Go confidently in your dreams, live the life you have imagined.” ~ David Henry Thoreau
Have you heard the inspiring story of Dallas Clayton? The author who is being touted as the next Dr. Seuss?
From his interview on the Jeff Probst show the other day, he revealed that he was a person without direction in his life until he became a father and decided to write a book for his son. The rest is history. He wrote an outstanding narrative that children could well relate to, and he discovered he had art talent and could do his own illustrations, also.
His first book, An Awesome Book of Love, which came out of wanting to communicate his love for his child, sold like wildfire. This print-on-demand title kept selling out. Eventually, he was contacted by large, mainstream publishing house, and they offered him 10%. His response to that was “Why should I sign a deal like that? I am already making 100%.” Long and short of the story – he was eventually offered a “sweet deal,” which allowed him to start a foundation for literacy “The Awesome World Foundation.” http://www.veryawesomeworld.com/.
Clayton said, in his interview with Jeff Probst, one of the biggest benefits that came with writing the book for his son, who was five when the first book was published, is that “his son saw what it takes to author and publish a book.” He saw his Dad involved in the entire process of the business - writing, illustrating, making mock-up books and even shipping the books from their living room when he needed a fulfillment company. Clearly, an eye-opening experience for a child who probably thinks books magically appear on library bookshelves. And it all began with independent publishing and taking a leap of faith.
I love these kinds of success stories!

“Art tends toward balance, order, judgment of relative values, the laws of growth, the economy of living – very good things for anyone to be interested in.” ~ Robert Henri
After a winter season that seems to have lasted into infinity, it as if I am looking through dirty windows. I am feeling shuttered up, listless. Creativity and inspiration? What’s that? Funny, how the weather affects us.
Yesterday, gave me hope I was looking for – it was warm and sunny. Finally, snow only exists on upper elevations. I am so looking forward to spring and summer. This week I will set off to visit business clients in the other parts of the country. I have a lot to accomplish but, a change of scenery, alone, is bound to bring all kinds of fulfilling things to reinvigorate my spirit.
Strings Music Festival will again be at the centerpiece of my summer. I love that big name stars including Lyle Lovett, this summer, will come to entertain in this remote northwestern town. In the other seasons, the piled-up snow is replaced with artistic experiences, of all kinds, heaped up-high. http://bit.ly/151Hi0g .
I’m also excited about a July event – A Day for Writers, the 32nd annual, sponsored by the Steamboat Writers Group. John Calderazzo and Clay Haskell will help us explore writing from the perspective of an essayist and screenwriter. And of course, the ever-popular Five Minutes of Fame, hosted by Cesare Rosati, will give local authors an opportunity to read from their works in progress. This year, I may just have to add my voice. Although “regulars” have heard it, there are others who have not. http://on.fb.me/10LKPhM .
Get out and enjoy local arts in your community, this summer. And if your plans include travel, this book may come in handy, if you are looking to visit some arts destinations. “The 100 BestArtTowns in America” by John Villani, can be ordered through e-commerce. http://bit.ly/18aAIjT .

“Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the window which hope has opened” ~ Charles Spurgeon

To many people around the world, preparing for Easter means more than shopping for Peeps™ candy, jelly beans, chocolate eggs and other confections. Spring is the season of renewal of spirit. For people of faith, that means remembering the Easter story of biblical times – a tale of crucifiction, death, resurrection and life.
On this Film Friday, I have resurrected a list of the top ten Easter movies of all times. Although Easter is several weeks away, perhaps your family would enjoy receiving one of these films in their Easter basket. I am posting this list early so you can add one of these DVDs to your shopping cart. Many of them are considered to be epic productions and can be located, and your order can be fulfilled through the Internet Movie Database www.imdb.com :
- Passion of Christ (2004)
- The Robe (1953)
- Ben Hur (1959)
- Holiday Inn (1942)
- Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
- King of Kings (1961)
- The Easter Parade (1948)
- Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
- Jesus of Nazareth (1977)
- The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)
It’s interesting, as I was doing research for this blog I noticed that most of these films were produced decades ago. Is it true that the American people have fallen out of favor with the one of the cornerstone principles that our country was founded upon, faith? Is that why contemporary filmmakers are not approaching religious subjects? I’d like to think not, and Reelz is offering outstanding programming over the Easter Season.
Barabbas: Where the Bible Left off…His Story of Redemption Began, a Reelz Easter Event, premiers Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26. Part I of the mini-series, featuring Billy Zane, will be broadcast on the night of March 30 and Part II on March 31. To find out the times and the channel for Reelz in your viewing area, please visit this link . There is also a trailer on the Reelz website .http://www.reelz.com/barabbas/.

I woke up this morning and turned on the news. The first image I saw were two girls kissing the ground they walked on. The women were among the 4200 passengers who had just gotten off the cruise liner that caught fire. There are many things to be thankful for – the vacationers were rescued, there was no loss of life and the vessel was brought safely to shore after days of people living in horrible, unsanitary conditions.
As I listened to stories of passengers recounting the incident, time and time again, I heard that the employees of Carnival Cruise Line did all they possibly could to keep calm and fulfill the needs of the passengers within their abilities.
Sadly, there are people in this world who live in squalor everyday, and their lives are shipwrecks. They are unable to escape, however, they still manage to find a sense of inspiration and gratefulness in their lives. Attached is an article on how to find the positive when life challenges us with difficult situations.http://mayocl.in/12RaDIt.
Although I am sure it was very difficult to find the good at the time, the 4200 passengers have returned home. Perhaps many have a renewed sense of gratitude for their lives. From here on out, their perspectives on life and their response to the vacation gone horribly wrong will all be about their attitudes.

“Music is what feelings sound like.” ~ Bo Bennett
I have found a new independent recording artist that I love. He has just released his first “ep” (extended play CD), Big Medicine. His voice and his lyrics are beautifully matched.
A little about the artist. Taylor Batton is a self-taught musician who writes his own tunes, plays the guitar and harmonica. He is a senior at MaineMaritimeAcademy in Castine, Maine. http://www.mainemaritime.edu/ Because he is a sailor, one might think he belts out rollicking seafaring tunes (perhaps with salty language) – far from it. His music is tender; musical narratives that seem to come from a deep spot in his soul. The timbre of his voice makes for easy listening. You’ll see what I mean when you hear my personal favorite songs on Taylor’s Big Medicine EP -The King and Queen, and Lies and Darkness, songs two and three. http://bit.ly/Uj5wx5.
Taylor has traveled many nautical miles over his short lifetime on wide open seas, experiencing the worst weather conditions imaginable as well as glorious days of ocean travel. The art of steering tugboats and other vessels, laden with heavy loads, safely to shore he has learned as a maritime student. He also understands how to crew on a team, all working together, to bring success.
When asked what sailing does for his songwriting, this is what Taylor had to say “You get a really strong sense of loneliness. At the same time, you feel a really strong and strange power. All of that kind of ties into how I go about writing the music. I just try and capture that feeling. ”
I look forward to hearing more independently produced music from this artist. Taylor Batton, may you always weather the storms of life through your ability to communicate with music. Keep on riding the high and low tides with your face directed to the light. Happy Valentines Day.

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it”~Michelangelo
Yes, Art Rocks! It adds personal fulfillment to my life. Visual arts, literary/language arts, performance arts…it’s all good! Art is part of our American culture and arts and crafts are unique from each country around the world.
Since I have moved to the western part of the United States, I have visited places where rock art rules. Petro glyphs, geological digs, caves and cliff dwellings indicate human existence that goes way back in time – interesting stuff! Trying to decipher crude symbols for common words is fun and all part of examining our ancient culture.
Do you have a rock hound, historian, paleontologist, geologist,a fan of Native American culture or artist in your life that really digs looking at and reading about rock art? There are a number of excellent books on the subject. During my Thanksgiving visit to Bandelier National Monument, I discovered a nice assortment in their gift shop. If you ever want to see a great historical site with authentic rock art, visit Bandeliers, a real national treasure in New Mexico. http://1.usa.gov/10XO7LB.

Many of independently published books about rock art and native American culture can be ordered in time for the holidays through e-commerce (internet shopping).

“Communications is at the heart of e-commerce and community.” ~ Meg Whitman
Tis the Season! According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, http://gbpg.net/U9ALXu Cyber Monday had a 20% increase in on-line buying this year. Other sources report as much as 30%. Fulfillment centers everywhere have increased their staffing to accommodate for the buying and shipping activity that will take place over the next month, until Christmas. People filling orders are like Santa’s little helpers – selecting items, wrapping and packaging. What would bring you personal fulfillment this holiday season? Almost every imaginable item is now sold through internet commerce.
Remember the days when the neighborhood store ran a tab and you went to the retail establishment to make your installment payments? You had to face the man who lent you the money! It felt more risky. And you wanted to stay on good terms with the shop keeper. “Buying things on time” in the 1950’s was so vastly different than buying on credit today, sixty years later.
On-line buying has become so easy! All it takes is a few clicks of a “mouse,” and you’ve got it – that thing you desire. No need to get in the car to mail your installment payment. Bill paying on-line reinforces the convenience.
What you would spend in gas going to a retail store and mailing your payment at the Post Office, can be put toward buying another present. A carrier will even deliver the goods to your door! What with the price of gasoline these days, that’s not a bad thing. What do you need? Express, priority or standard shipping? How much of a hurry are you in to have it?
Products are shipped worldwide, in short-order thanks to digital communication, logistics, computers, merchant services allowing for electronic funds transfer of currency – even money exchange from other countries is no big deal.
Welcome to the world of e-commerce! Happy Holiday Shopping, everyone!

The weekend before Thanksgiving I attended a concert called “What a Wonderful World” presented by the Yampa Valley Singers.
A fulfilling selection of thirteen songs was so appropriate to the season of thanksgiving; reminding me of things I am grateful for. The compositions ranged from spiritual to patriotic to contemporary show tunes. Most of the songs familiar; some creative renditions of the originals. Here is the list of musical numbers from the event.
- How Can I Keep from Singing?
- America the Beautiful
- For the Beauty of the Earth
- Home (from the Broadway show The Wiz)
- Try to Remember
- Blowin’ in the Wind
- Stopping by the Woods (based on Robert Frost’s poem)
- A Long Way from Home
- Blow Bugle Blow
- All Good Gifts
- I Vow to Thee, My Country
- Hava Nagila
- What a Wonderful World

I am so grateful the Yampa Valley Singers come together several times of the year to share their artisic talents and voices with our community. I’ve gotten such enjoyment out of each of their concerts since I moved to Steamboat.
As I sat enjoying the tune “How Can I Keep from Singing?” I thought if it wasn’t for my lack of a decent musical voice I would answer their call and join in. But, they wouldn’t want to hear my vocal utterances. Why ruin a good thing?
The Yampa Valley Singers sell independently published DVDs of their concerts- affordable gifts! The choral group is comprised of approximately 30 -35 of people -friends and neighbors to many in this valley. To order a CD of the music from the concert “What a Wonderful World,” please click on this link. http://bit.ly/UnLPCO.
Thank you for a very enjoyable evening, Yampa Valley Singers, and to the United Methodist Church in Steamboat for providing a space to hold the concert.
