“Your intellect may be confused but your emotions never lie to you.” ~ Roger Ebert
Siskel and Ebert, Leonard Maltin, some of the most well-known film critics of our time. Yesterday, Roger Ebert passed away at 70 years of age. Leonard Maltin said of Ebert’s death “The thing I’m remembering now, most, is his bravery,” referring to the health challenges he faced in recent years.
Can you imagine how many hours Ebert spent over the course of his forty-six year career in the screening room? His passion was watching movies and critiquing them. A fulfilling career but, not every production he watched was worthy of his attention. I’m sure he viewed his fair share of movies that were poorly edited, had holes in the plot, scripts without continuity, casting mistakes, visual effects blunders and acting goofs.
His film reviews were highly regarded. Albeit sometimes very spirited and outspoken in his independent thoughts, he was the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize. Roger Ebert was also author of twenty books, including I Hated, Hated, Hated this Movie.
The 15th annual Ebert Film Festival begins on April 17 at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign, Illinois. What Ebert called “one of the most beautiful films ever made,” Terrence Malick’s 1978 “Days of Heaven” will appropriately open the film festival. It won an Oscar for best cinematography.
To read more about this man who had a bright mind, a very observant eye and did so much to promote good films and the art of good filmmaking, please visit his website http://www.rogerebert.com/.

“ Art is not what you see but what you make others see.” ~ Degas
A life was changed on Academy Award night, when Inocente, a documentary film about a homeless girl and her passion for art, won an Oscar. Indeed, despite a dark and lonely past, Izucar, the subject of this real life story, has created a bright world around herself through her colorful art. Her unwillingness to give up on life and her belief in sharing her art with others has made for an inspiring story.
Husband and wife filmmakers, Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine decided to focus on the plight of Inocente Izucar when they met her through their involvement with artist Matt D’Arrigo and founder ARTS(A Reason to Survive), “a non-profit organization that focuses on using art as a form of therapy and healing, for children and young adults struggling with major life challenges..
According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, 1 out of every 45 children live a transient lifestyle, floating from street to motel to shelters to living out of cars. This number has increased 33% in the past three years alone. http://usat.ly/YtbFoP.
Izucar is representative of all youth who have discovered that their brightest moments in an hour or a day comes when they are exploring different mediums of art. For many, it is the only thing that gives them a positive reason to live.
To read more about this inspirational independent film and the documentary filmmakers, please visit this link. http://inocentedoc.com/. This DVD can be ordered through the Internet Movie Database http://imdb.to/W9lsUB.

“All things are possible until they are proved impossible. Even the impossible may only be so, as of now.” - Pearl S. Buck
Last week, The Bud Werner Memorial Library in Steamboat Springs, Colorado brought in a live stream of the TED Conference from Long Beach, California. I had hoped to individually highlight some of the presenters this week on this site. However, a better approach would be to share some of the fulfilling thoughts that I came away with after viewing a good deal of the four day broadcast.
“We”, meaning as a country and a world, are indeed blessed with:
- forward thinking, creative people
- a population of individuals who like to dream and imagine and ask “What if?”
- people, who when they believe in their passions, are not afraid to take risks
- technological advances that will increasingly free people to labor with their brains, rather than brawn.
- living during a time when turning the hypothetical to reality, is happening more often.
- learning more about our sixth sense and the amagydala – the emotive part of the brain.
- “At the precipice of a new era where ideas can be used for global fulfillment in the world, rather than for just personal gain.” As stated by a TED presenter.
- an era when professions will be more cognitively demanding and specialized.
The TED conference was designed to stir thought, and for me, it fulfilled its mission. When I asked myself “Who Are We?” after viewing the broadcast, I can’t help but defer to the tag line of TED. We are a population of “The Young, the Wise and the Undiscovered.” Thank God for that! It opens up all kinds of possibilities for future generations.
A special shout out to Jenny Lay, events coordinator and the library board members who do an outstanding job of bringing thoughtful programs to our community.

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.” ~ Unknown
At the beginning of the week I posted a blog called Bundled Energy. The gist of the writing was that positive energy brings good things about. If you missed it, here is the link. http://bit.ly/XirgZP.
Twenty five years ago, a bundle of joy, was placed in my arms, swaddled in a blanket. A gift that has showered my husband and me with blessings in so many ways. What a pleasure it has been to watch our bundle of energy grow and develop, from newborn to an adult, now thriving of his own accord. Our dreams have been fulfilled and the arrival that day was the birth of our son.
Today, we wish Marc a fantastic Film Friday, although for him, everyday is Film Friday. In retrospect, with the path his life has taken, perhaps he should have arrived between the covers of a DVD. Just kidding! http://bit.ly/UJrK73.
Happy 25th Birthday, Marc, on Monday! We are overwhelmed by our love for you and you make us proud, everyday. Have a wonderful year ahead and enjoy the Academy Awards on Sunday night.

Embracing Life and Career in N.M.
Putting his energy to work & reaping the rewards of staying focused on his dreams.

Appreciate the gift of every day – ordinary and extraordinary!

Art allows us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. ~ Thomas Merton
I chuckled to myself yesterday. Why is it that when we parents ask our children, no matter what age they are, what they are doing they always reply with a pat answer of “nothin’?”
The other day, I checked in on my son’s blog. I found he ‘s not coming clean with me. He posted his year in review and quite to the contrary, he’s been one busy young creative. And he forgot to mention in his list of accomplishments that he also has a fulltime job and sometimes teaches his craft of independent filmmaking, too. http://bit.ly/VnC0EZ.
Since he can take a good ribbin’ all in good humor, I am going to make a request of him for the coming year. I am going to ask him to every once in a while, take a deep breath, relax, and do exactly what he tells me he is doing – nothin’!
We all tend to overextend ourselves in this fast paced world and sometimes need to practice the art of relaxation. There is a good article posted by rowdykittens.com about the importance of putting our feet up and doing something just for ourselves. http://bit.ly/WIf4wY .
It’s wise to set aside a little time weekly, just to BE, and that means something different to each of us. I guess, right now it is my time to BE a mother speaking.
As the parent of an artist, I need to remember, for my son’s sake, there is not much distinction between working at his profession, and doing something pleasurable. Both bring inspiration and joy. It is all part of living a fulfilling life.
Namaste, my son, I bow to you for all that you do!

Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. ~ Kahil Gibran
Filmmaker Magazine has an interview with Tim O’Brien, Director and writer of the newly released movie Fairhaven. For a debut feature film, it is getting good reviews and it is a Tribeca Film festival award winner.
In summary, Fairhaven is about a fisherman who gives up his life to pursue a career as a fulltime writer. When his high school buddies return to the coastal town of Fairhaven, for a funeral, the gathering stirs up old feelings and relationships. As the three men recollect their past involvement with each other, the bonds they thought were as dead as the town in winter, they find that their camaraderie is quite alive as they begin reconnecting.
This film is getting critical acclaim for the character’s realistically portrayed emotions and personalities. They are as authentic as life itself, in small communities. To read the interview in Filmmaker Magazine with director Tim O’Brien, visit this link. http://bit.ly/UwOdWO.
The New York Times has also given the film Fairhaven a decent review. http://nyti.ms/V9PpTZ.
This independent film is now available through Internet Movie Database, i-tunes, cable and Amazon and in select theatres. Check it out.

“Filmmaking can be a fine art.” ~ Terri Windling
The selections for the 2013 Sundance Film Festival have been announced, and they’re listed in Filmmaker Magazine and on Sundance’s website. Independent filmmakers covet being selected for this film festival, which was begun in 1978 as a way to bring more filmmakers to the State of Utah.
Last year, a new festival director was put into place, and although the name of the festival has changed over the years, the mission of discovering independent artists, remains the same. Here are just a few picks from several categories that will compete for “best of” awards:
U.S. Dramatic Competition
- Austenland
- Fruit Value
- In a World
- The Spectacular Now
U.S. Documentary Competition
- American Promise
- The Good Life
- Twenty Feet from Stardom
- Inequality for All
World Cinema Dramatic Competition
- Circles
- Crystal Fairy
- Lasting
- There Will Come A Day
This winter’s festival will run from January 17 – 27th. To read the sixty-six selections, to purchase tickets and learn more about the Sundance Film Festival, held in Park City, Utah every year, please visit this site. http://bit.ly/TwQ6T .
Have a good weekend everyone. I am hoping to take in the Life of Pi at the local theatre.

The holiday buying season will soon be upon us. In order to give you a head start on gift ideas for family or friends who are interested in filmmaking as amateurs or professionals, today’s blog will be focused on books about the industry.
The Independent lists a selection of thirty books, many independently published, on things such as:
- Visual effects in films
- Directing Films
- History of Film and Cinematography
- Finding success and fulfillment as a filmmaker
- Legal issues of the film industry
- Acting
- Techniques for photography and filming
- Film Editing
- Film Distribution

Help your favorite filmmaker or want-to-be filmmaker build his or her library and career by purchasing one or more of these books to give as gifts this holiday! You will be giving a gift that will contain valuable information to reference from year after year.
See you on Monday, for more independent thoughts, words and views from www.CornerstoneFulfillmentService.com.
