“Our faith in the present dies out before our faith in the future.” ~ Ruth Benedict
This morning, I read an essay by Margaret Sanger, in the book “This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women.” For those who can’t remember why the author’s name sounds familiar, Margaret Sanger was a pioneer who founded, in 1916, the first women’s birth control clinic. The title of the essay was “When Children are Wanted.” In essence, the essay describes Sanger’s wish that children be born from the desires of parents who deeply care and will nurture them.
This essay, for me, also had relevance to careers and employment. I ponder, for instance, whether the two young entrepreneurial spirits that I mentioned in my blog posting last Saturday entitled Ahhh… Young Entrepreneurship, will ever be in a position to pursue their passions in life and not be forced to take positions of employment just because they need work?
There is a mighty big task in front us if we Americans are to create a jobs market so idealistic. A stepping stone toward that end is that our children be given the tools, in school, to keep up in this global and technological landscape and build confidence to pursue their individual dreams and talents. “Would people find ultimate personal fulfillment and thrive by doing what they really love?” I wonder.
Sanger’s vision for ideal parenting means “beyond thyself – thinking of terms of a future.” In this global economy that means having entrepreneurial spirit that includes making worldwide connections to construct business for the positive benefit of others.
I believe there are a lot of people who would like to start up new companies, based on their interests and for the good of other people. Being the eternal optimist, I hope our country can get our economy straightened around real quickly. If America can make this country conducive once again to free enterprise, there is a whole new generation of new graduates with individual artistic talent, entrepreneurial spirit, and technological skill and foresight that could make our country fly!
