Film Friday: Movies of the 1960s

If you remember shows like Mickey Mouse, Bozo the Clown, Captain Kangaroo, Ozzie & Harriet and Leave it to Beaver you are probably among the first generation of American children to be raised by television.

You’ll also remember what it was like watching a movie back in the 1950s and 1960s. Just setting up the film screen and the projector in the living room was a big production. Then there were the challenges of the film getting messed up in the projector when it malfunctioned – piles of film, knotted and tangled on the floor.

It was a different experience than in today’s world of digital filmmaking, where watching a movie entails the ease of slipping a disc into a DVD player which projects a movie through a computer or television screen.  Convenient and hassle-free!

 

If you are a baby boomer, you can relate to some of my favorite movies from the 1960s like:

  • Lilies of the Field
  • To Sir with Love

Oh how I loved Sidney Poitier in those two films.

Then there were my Disney Favorites from the same decade:

  • My Fair Lady
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Sound of Music

Let’s not forget some of the Westerns that the boys and men in the family liked such as:

  • The Guns of Navarone
  • How the West was Won

And the Jerry Lewis movies brought us such memorable characters and silliness that the scenes will be forever etched in our memories from films like:

  • The Nutty Professor
  • The Patsy

Remember Hayley Mills in Pollyanna? Oh, how I have the most heartwarming memories of my cousin, my twin sister and me seeing that movie together with our mothers at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, Vermont when we were on vacation.

I love revisiting the old television and movies from the era of my childhood – the 1950s and 1960s. When was the last time you stepped back in time and reread a book from your past or watched an old favorite movie? It’s a blast! Connecting to the Great Outdoors

If you are a baby boomer, no doubt you learned to read from the Dick and Jane series. For forty years (1930s – 1970s) these books were used by elementary school teachers around the world to teach children the art of reading.

dick and jane jumping ropeDid you ever notice how the Dick and Jane series had so many pictures of children engaged in outdoors activities? The books typically featured images of kids walking the dog, playing hopscotch on the sidewalk, planting flowers, pulling wagons, playing ball, lying in a hammock under the shade tree day-dreaming, and flying kites outdoors.

Miss Zerna Sharp, known as the “Mother of Dick and Jane” http://bit.ly/1pwGk0u had great insight in the creation of the series because she felt that students would enjoy learning to read and find it much easier if they identified with the children shown in the illustrations. If she were alive today to redo the series to make the stories more relatable for this generation of children, she’d probably be horrified to realize what would the illustrations would look like. Rather than publishing pictures of fit children playing outdoors, I suppose we’d see images of  children engaged in all things digital and figure drawings of children with physiques that look very different than those of the children from the 1930s – 1970s. dick and jane use the force

We are living in a very visual age. With the power of digital marketing perhaps we need to stir children’s interests and entice them into wanting to experience the great adventure of life called the “great outdoors.” Personally, I think our whole society would benefit by becoming more aware of our connection to mother nature and all that she has to offer.  And it may even save us some trips to the doctor!

The Lady in the Choir

laughing sistersWhy is it that when you have a twin sister, everything is doubly  funny? I swear my sister and I can have more fun laughing at something that might not strike anyone else as being one bit funny.

A good hearty belly laugh is only annoying if it happens in inappropriate places. When we were kids, it always happened in church. My sister and I didn’t dare even glance at each other when the mezzo-soprano in the choir started singing. There was something about her voice that made us listen but we found her inflection hysterical. If we even saw one anothers faces in our peripheral vision, it was all over – we’d lose control and laugh so hard we’d have tears running down our cheeks. Then our little brothers got in on the action.

Somehow our parents always knew exactly what started it and struggled to keep their own joy of hearing us twins laughing together in check and in cheek. Someone had to be the adults and keep order in the family. Week after week we vowed to our parents that it would never happen again, but oh, how we were telling a story.

Since I have been taught that God is love, I knew I’d be forgiven and not be struck down by the devil. Our scolding often came from someone else who you’ll learn more about in my memoir. Whenever she got word of our childish antics, her words had a more powerful effect than anything our parents could have ever uttered.

“Lord a Mercy,” she’d say “What is you? A bunch a heathens, laughin’ in da Lord’s house?” Have you ever noticed how carefully one listens to someone who is speaking a different dialect?

“It was the funny lady in the choir’s fault,” my sister and I’d say, taking no responsibility for our inability to control ourselves. After all, we were just children.

How Sweet the Sound

Some of the most powerful words I heard as a child came from a person who had great significance in my life but she was someone other than my parents. I can hardly wait for you to meet her.  I will introduce you to her in my memoir when it is published this spring.

Her words to me went something like this:

Oh…how sweeeet the sound! Enough to make anyone feel they are the bestest! I’ll always wonder if the person who I have included in my life story had any idea what impact her simple words  meant to me as a little child?

The words we speak to one another truly matter because they have the capability to influence and inspire us, help us to realize our potential and fill us up with love and all kinds of things that bring us fulfilling feelings. Words such as these can be better than a snug wrap around someone’s shoulders. http://awarmembrace.com.

Shoes Bring Back Memories

Antique photos can be very stirring because some times they dredge up old and difficult memories we’d rather not think about. Yet some images have the power to help us recapture feelings that are as sweet and fulfilling as thoughts of vanilla pudding.

saddle shoesWhen I came across this photo of saddle shoes and white cotton socks, my recollections of standing at the bus stop on my first day of school came flooding back. My saddle shoes and white socks went everywhere together, like my twin sister and me. One was never without the other – kind of like the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that were in our school lunchboxes. I recall how the socks felt around my ankles – flimsy, insufficient and weak like my body. I can’t associate them with any warm feelings. My sister by my side was my strong, fuzzy security blanket.

When I look at the picture, I can even remember the precise smell of the white shoe polish our classmates used to keep their shoes looking new and unscuffed. Mine never really needed to be polished. My shoes didn’t get knocked about or hard use. In fact, just outgrowing a pair of shoes was a big accomplishment.

This image of saddle shoes has brought back an entire childhood worth of memories. Now six decades later I look forward to sharing my story. My hope is that parents who have kids dealing with childhood illness will find something comforting and hopeful in the memoir. Most of all I want the book to bring to a smile to some faces.

Mentoring Women in Business

Have you ever wondered why people chose the professions they do? Sometimes there is little choice as to how people support themselves and others make very deliberate career choices, according to what fits their passions and personality.

cookie lockhartCookie Lockhart, a member of our We Write Steamboat networking group for independent publishers, couldn’t have chosen a career path more suitable to her temperament. Her “pioneering spirit” led her to become the only female student  among 126 men in the Class of 1963 to pursue a career in an industry that was dominated by males. Lockhart followed in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, and has been a real driving force in the auction business. She has served as an outstanding mentor for many women in business because of her leadership qualities including her love of people and her fortitude. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Cookie, you’d never forget her. Her personality is larger than life and she has a winning spirit.

It’s been a fulfilling career for Lockhart. She is the only woman who has ever been inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame, and she’s also a member of the Colorado Auctioneers Hall of Fame.

Facing the Sun

One of the top reasons I’ve loved living in Colorado for the past five years, is the high percentage of sunny days we are able to enjoy. Typically, the sky is clear blue and for people who spend a lot of time outdoors, over-exposure to a warm weather or high altitude winter sun is a concern. We hear many warnings about too much exposure to  the sun from doctors but still, many bask in it fulfilling an indomitable need to soothe mind, body and soul that comes with being outdoors.

Author Sydney P Waud has written a book called Loving the Sun… Exposed without Fear which provides a fascinating look into the biological imperative that drives some 300,000,000 people around the globe to vacation annually in warm climates, think Hawaii, the Caribbean, Palm Springs, the Seychelles, Marbella and Cancun. The book gives up-to- date information on the dos and don’ts when spending time in bright sun relaxing, attending outdoor sporting events, gardening, playing sports, sunbathing, fishing, boating, hiking or swimming.

In spite of ample warnings not to sunbathe, the author realizes people will persist in doing so and therefore takes the pragmatic approach providing sound advice on how to prevent over-exposure to limit as much as possible damage to your skin and importantly what to look for when it has suffered the effects – both early and cumulative – of too much ultraviolet radiation. On September 6th, National Read a Book Day I mentioned that reading one spark of an idea from a book can change us for a lifetime. I recently saw a sentence that motivated me big time! I took seriously the words: “the person whose life is full of faith is on the offense; he or she is taking charge of life, making decisions and making things happen.”

morning-roosterHow’s that for a call to action? For weeks I had been indecisive about whether or not to sign up for a public speaking class. I knew it was something that I needed to do for myself if I am to pursue my dreams for my publication. As soon as I read the inspirational thought, I acted immediately and enrolled in the course, before I could “chicken out.”

The course is in the early weeks but it is going well. When it’s time, I will be better prepared to “strut my stuff,” and I will be one more step closer to what I dream of doing.

As I have said before on All Things Fulfilling, I try at all costs to hold myself accountable to any ideas that I broadcast on this website. Otherwise, I am full of phony-baloney. That is not one of my lifetime aspirations I can assure you of that!

The inspiring thought came from THE book I’ve hinted about previously that I will be revealing in due course. Before it appears on this site, I will give you the heads up!
