Film Friday: Outdoors Adventure

Thanks to a posting I saw on www.cruxcollective.com I became aware of a documentary film of interest in the outdoor adventure movie category.

valley uprising2

Valley Uprising http://reelrocktour.com/ is a film about extreme athletes who climb to explore massive cliffs, crags, boulders and rocks in Yosemite National Park in high up places. They are a whole culture of adventurous souls who are the next generation of outdoorsmen who flock to this area and find their “religion and fulfillment” in rock climbing.

Red Bull Magazine says it’s “The best climbing film ever made.”

It won the Grand Prize at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Just one award among several others.

Worthy of attention, I am sure, although I have yet to see it.  I am putting this film on my 2015 list of films not to miss! Sounds like a nice evening of adventure from the comfort of my living room. Yet, Yosemite is on my National Park Wish List to see upclose some day.

Creative Economy

“The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play.” ~ Arnold J Toynbee

For the new generation of college graduates, employment and making a living has a very different approach to it. Business is not the same as it was even ten years ago. For many, the traditional 9 to 5 type jobs have deemed to be archaic. Flex-time and working remotely has changed the way many people labor and spend their free hours.

As a growing creative economy takes off, young adults are finding more fulfilling ways of making a living which includes the development of new types of media and communications.

There is a new site called Crux Collective http://www.cruxcollective.com which officially launched last week. It’s “mission is to educate, inspire, and encourage traditional and non-traditional exploration of the outdoors.”

If you are a skier, snowboarder or technie who is interested in the development of equipment used by competitors and to save lives in avalanches, check out this video footage. You’ll be surprised at the new generation of  gear that’s coming to the marketplace for outdoors enthusiasts.http://bit.ly/1xgCJXq

I look forward to following http://www.cruxcollective.com. It brings together a big variety of interesting stories from around the world thanks to the gift of new technologies.

Film Friday: The Theory of Everything

Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. ~ Stephen Hawking

The theory of everythingMany film fans have been waiting for the biopic film The Theory of Everything. It is the story of Stephen Hawking, the famous scientist (cosmologist/physicist) and his marriage to his first love, Jane. The wait is over! Today it will be released in theatres across the country.

The film is a love story, but parts, from a few of the reviews I’ve read are a little difficult to watch because the audience watches the sad physical decline of Hawking due to his advancing ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Hawking was diagnosed when we was 21 years old, just prior to meeting Jane.

Admittedly, he says up until his diagnosis he was a “wastrel” who loved to party. Once he was advised his lifespan would be limited due to his condition, he began to fully use his brilliant mind studying the big bang theory and dark holes.

The drama is said to be a beautiful story and a great testimony to a brilliant mind.

Film Friday: Burts Buzz

honeysuckle and beeThe honeysuckle is learning to appreciate all the small drops in  the sweetness of  life.” ~ Sue Batton Leonard

People find their purpose in life in different capacities but how could an insect inspire a company to try to change to world? Answers are revealed in the documentary film, Burts Buzz, which gives a look at the recluse behind the brand Burts Bees. For more info.click here

This  film, which was released on June 6, 2014, tells the story of how a Maine artist meets a beekeeper and by pairing their interests, they start a company in 1984. With meager beginnings the two begin making bees wax candles, but that was just the start. Since then the brand has grown and is recognizable in places around the world for their products which now include balms for the lips, face, body, babies and more.

In 2007, the non-profit arm of the company The Greater Good Foundation (a 501(c)(3),  was established with a focus on responsible environmental conservancy and protecting honeybees. To read more about the mission, go to  http://bit.ly/1sbQVER.

The film has opened to mixed reviews. Some claim the nectar of the story was not fully drawn out in the narrative. Watch it and decide for yourself. There must be something sweet in it.

This is a well-written adventure told from the point of view of an intelligent, observant, and mature girl on the brink of adolescence, with a knack for sharing relevant detail.” ~ Publishers Weekly

Happy Film Friday! Arriving in theatres today is a movie brought to you by Enthuse Entertainment, an independent film production company.  Alone Yet Not Alone  is based on a real life account of a family during a time in history when British and French troops were struggling for control over the abundant resources in the new territory called America.

Despite increasing stresses and hardships around them, the Leininger family gives thanks and praise for the beauty surrounding them in nature and for their newly-found treasured right of “the freedom to worship.” The family had fled Germany to avoid religious persecution.

Through a terrible ordeal, when the two Leininger daughters are kidnapped by the natives,  the Leninger’s find security in their belief that what their homestead and their land would not provide, they would find fulfillment in God’s promise.

Fool Notions and Fun

Anywhere is paradise; it’s up to you. ~Author Unknown

Can you hear me clapping? It’s Friday and I am happy! I came along for the ride with my husband to one of my favorite places to visit in the West – Park City, Utah. He’s here for some ski business meetings. It gives me a chance to explore and have a much needed change of scenery for a few days away from Steamboat Springs. This is another beautiful mountain resort town where Olympians reign supreme.

On Wednesday, I scoped out the area to see what I missed my first visit here two years ago. I visited Redstone – an up-and-coming upscale shopping area just down the road from the ski jumps in Olympic Park.

All things fulfilling is what I found at Paisley Pomegranate. http://paisleypomegranate.com.  The store was filled to the brim with whimsy, fun, creativity, art and design in this gift shop that has been voted #1 People’s Choice. It’s the kind of retail fantasy land I like to browse so I can think about fool notions and nothing at all, all at once. Pure escapism at it’s best. Here are some photos:

Next week I’ll post more of what I’ve mined from this training ground for Olympians and the home of the Sundance Film Festival. During the film festival the town is chock-a-block full of celebrity gatherings and independent filmmakers. They arrive on the scene to showcase their art and put their hopes in dreams of going home with an award-winning film destined for cinemas across the country.

It’s a gorgeous spring day here day here in Park City, Utah. The trees are just beginning to leaf out and turn green. There’s still white-capped peaks on the upper elevations of the Wasatch Mountains. Happy Friday, everyone! Do return to All Things Fulfilling on Monday.Sue’s memoir

Film Friday: Authors Anonymous

We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.”
Ernest Hemingway

What do you get when you take a group of poorly adjusted, unpublished writers and add a new member who snags an agent immediately, and finds unexpected success?

  • Jealousy
  • Anger
  • Head scratching
  • Tension
  • Hurt hearts

And comedic results! Author’s Anonymous is a newly released movie, now showing in select theatres and available on DVD, beginning June 17th.

Although this independently produced PG-13 film does not have top ratings, it is fun entertainment  for aspiring writers, book lovers, art councils, writers groups, MFA writing students to watch and discuss in a group setting.

Film Friday: Movies of the 1960s

“Nostalgia is a file that removes the rough edges from the good old days.” ~ Doug Larson

If you remember shows like Mickey Mouse, Bozo the Clown, Captain Kangaroo, Ozzie & Harriet and Leave it to Beaver you are probably among the first generation of American children to be raised by television.

old movie projector from 1950s. jpg

You’ll also remember what it was like watching a movie back in the 1950s and 1960s. Just setting up the film screen and the projector in the living room was a big production. Then there were the challenges of the film getting messed up in the projector when it malfunctioned – piles of film, knotted and tangled on the floor.

It was a different experience than in today’s world of digital filmmaking, where watching a movie entails the ease of slipping a disc into a DVD player which projects a movie through a computer or television screen.  Convenient and hassle-free!

If you are a baby boomer, you can relate to some of my favorite movies from the 1960s like:

  • Lilies of the Field
  • To Sir with Love

Oh how I loved Sidney Poitier in those two films.

Then there were my Disney Favorites from the same decade:

  • My Fair Lady
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Sound of Music

Let’s not forget some of the Westerns that the boys and men in the family liked such as:

  • The Guns of Navarone
  • How the West was Won

And the Jerry Lewis movies brought us such memorable characters and silliness that the scenes will be forever etched in our memories from films like:

  • The Nutty Professor
  • The Patsy

Mills-Hayley-Pollyanna_04

Remember Hayley Mills in Pollyanna? Oh, how I have the most heartwarming memories of my cousin, my twin sister and me seeing that movie together with our mothers at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, Vermont when we were on vacation.

I love revisiting the old television and movies from the era of my childhood – the 1950s and 1960s. When was the last time you stepped back in time and reread a book from your past or watched an old favorite movie? It’s a blast! Movies from almost every era can be located through the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com.

Have a great weekend and do return to All Things Fulfilling on Monday.

Film Friday: Top Irish Movies

St. Patty’s Day is just around the corner. A few years ago for the “Wearing of the Green Day,” I featured outstanding Irish writers. If you missed the blog, here is a link to it. https://allthingsfulfilling.com/2012/03/17/irish-city-of-literature/.

Today on this Film Friday, I thought I’d feature the top ten Irish movies. I’m going to put “My Left Foot,” a story about a disabled artist, poet and writer on my list. I’ve been hoping to see this movie for quite some time now, and still haven’t.Click for Info & Ordering

Here is the list. To read summaries of each of these movies, please go to IrishCentral.com, through this link. http://bit.ly/1dMBPwP.

No one can tell better stories than the Irish because there are many colorful characters to draw from in most Irish families.
