Decking the Halls with Wildlife

“Great things are done when men and mountains meet.” ~ William Blake

I am getting excited! The holiday season is just around the corner and the Arts community in Steamboat Springs, Colorado has reason to celebrate! The Steamboat Art Museum is hosting an exhibition of award winning, wildlife artist Ken Carlson. His paintings will be exhibited throughout the winter season from December 18 to April 10th.

Ken Carlson is an artist who resides in Texas. He has won many awards including the prestigious Frederic Remington Award. His work is exhibited at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, to name a few. His paintings have also helped raise money for conservation concerns.

If you are unable to attend the exhibition at the Steamboat Art Museum, his work is featured along with other masters of the trade in the newly released  book “Patrons without Peer” published by Collectors Covey in Dallas, Texas. It can be ordered in time for holiday buying through www.WestWindFineArt.com.

Having Ken Carlson arrive in Steamboat Springs, CO is almost as good as Santa Claus coming to town. Don’t miss the opportunity to see wildlife art at it’s finest!

Best of Times for Indy Publishers

Richard Schmid and His Influence catalogcover

There is no doubt about it, independent publishers have never had it so good! The independent publishing scene is hot, hot, hot! Proof is in the statistics cited by seasoned publishing professionals.

Desktop publishing software has been developed so that it has become user friendly. The arrival of the Expresso Book Machine really has independent publishers smiling!

For those of you unfamiliar with the EBM (Expresso Book Machine), it has the capacity of downloading manuscripts from PDF format files, printing and delivering a perfect bound book within 10-15 minutes time. I kid you not! I have seen it first hand at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester Center, VT.  www.Northshire.com

The Northshire Bookstore was the first retail store to obtain one of these print on demand book machines. Even now, few establishments have them.  A visit to the Northshire Bookstore to see this beast in action will be well worth your time. The Publishers Weekly Magazine has given the Northshire an award of distinction for “The Best Independent Bookstore.”

When you go, plan to spend a good part of the day exploring the nooks and crannies of the store. It is like a destination resort, unlike any other you have visited before. But, do me a favor, tell General Manager Chris Merrow that Sue Leonard from Cornerstone Fulfillment Service, LLC says “hello!” And one more thing, please leave your kindle reader behind!

Coffee Table Books

I have accumulated alot of “coffee table” books over the years. You know, the kind you sit down and leaf through while you have a cup of tea. The other day, I picked up a new “coffee table” book that has wonderful images of paintings in one of the foremost private collections in the country. Painters such as Nancy Guzik, Timothy Thies, Matt Smith and Richard Schmid are all represented in the book. Wonderful wildlife artists including Ken Carlson, Clyde Aspevig, and so many others grace the pages of “Patrons without Peer: The McCloy Collection.” I know I will pick up this hefty book time and time again as I sit with my afternoon cup of tea.
