Brother-for-saleOh, brother! How I can relate- there were many times when I was growing up that I felt just like the little girl in this image. 

Did you ever consider that sibling relationships are the longest bonds we will have in our lives with other people? There is a lot of research about how birth order affects our family ties.

My siblings have been on my mind a lot recently since I have been writing a book which involves many universal issues, including human relationships. The manuscript has been in the hands of select advance readers, including a child psychologist  and the feedback has been invaluable.  I am most grateful for it and I’m wrapping up final revisions before the book is published. My very realistic goal is to have it complete this year.

My family has not read my manuscript. I didn’t want the dynamics of the book to be changed by the  opinions of family members. I’ve dropped only a few clues about the storyline, and they are chomping at the bit to read it. By now, they might  be questioning whether there is really a book in the making or whether I am  just  taunting them and  making teasing promises like when we were children.

Only kidding! I can hardly wait for my family to read it. They don’t know to what what extent they play roles in the storyline.

In Search of Soul and Self

Note: Today’s blog is devoted to all beautiful soul building individuals in the family of man. The message below, in red and black, is a reminder that the fabric of the world’s population is so interesting due our diversity as individuals, woven together, living on one planet.

I am a very proud aunt! I have five nieces, and two nephews, not even including two more lovely nieces on my husband’s side of the family. There’s notto my neice a bad apple in the bunch of them; each has a unique personality and career choice so different than each of their cousins. All are in their twenties, except the youngest who will be off to college, in September, with ambitions of becoming a veterinarian specializing in horses.

0814329616In a few short days, one of my nieces will be going to Japan to teach English as a second language. Wisely, she has chosen to travel abroad for an extended period, now, while she is young, with few encumbrances. She will be working at a very reputable school, has an apartment arranged, and is up for the challenge. Her personality traits, I believe, are well suited to the task. She is very resourceful and a beautiful soul building individual.

Not to put  pressure on her or anything, but, I hope she will  start a blog; she is a fantastic writer. I would love to see photos and learn, from this side of the world, about her experiences in the classroom, as well as more about Japanese art, history and other interesting cultural information that she encounters. 

I love and will miss  my dear niece, and I hope it will not be too long before I see her again. But,  I know it will be a fulfilling experience. She’ll grow, as a person, as a result of sharing her talents with children abroad.

Keeping Art In Perspective

I chuckled to myself yesterday. Why is it that when we parents ask our children, no matter what age they are, what they are doing they always reply with a pat answer of “nothin’?” 

The other day,  I checked in on my son’s blog. I found he ‘s not coming clean with me. He posted his year in review and quite to the contrary, he’s been one busy young creative. And he forgot to mention in his list of accomplishments that he also has a fulltime job and sometimes teaches his craft of independent filmmaking, too.  http://bit.ly/VnC0EZ.

Since he can take a good ribbin’ all in good humor, I am going to make a request of him for the coming year. I am going to ask him to every once in a while, take a deep breath, relax, and do exactly what he tells me he is doing – nothin’! 

We all tend to overextend ourselves in this fast paced world and sometimes need to practice the art of relaxation. There is a good article posted by rowdykittens.com about the importance of putting our feet up and doing something just for ourselves. http://bit.ly/WIf4wY . 

It’s wise to set aside a little time weekly, just to BE, and that means something different to each of us. I guess, right now it is my time to BE a mother speaking. 

art is part of lifeAs the parent of an artist, I need to remember,  for my son’s sake, there is not much distinction between working at his profession, and doing something pleasurable. Both bring inspiration and joy.  It is all part of living a fulfilling life.

Crossing Mountains to Get There

If you have been to Park City, Utah, the venue of this independent film festival, you know  the area is surrounded by the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains and the historic downtown is steep with artistic flair. The screening venues for the event, such as the Egyptian Theatre, entertained locals from the “rough and tumble days of exploration and active mining.”

The festival, founded by actor Robert Redford in 1981 brings together, every winter, scores of people who love independent films, as well as people who work in the industry. What began with 10 emerging filmmakers decades ago has grown and evolved into one of the most respected film-award contests in the country. It’s hard to find good news on TV. The other day, I was getting more disturbed by the moment, as I flipped through the TV news channels. Everything I heard was negative and upsetting. I subject myself to that, as little as possible.

Finally, I flipped to Fox News and just happened to catch the story of Laura Schroff & Maurice Mazyck. Have you heard their beautiful story? It is about the power of one person to change the life of another. Although, if you listen to interviews of these two people, whose lives came together many years ago, this is, by no means, a one-sided story.

The tale is about trust, family, hunger, need, rebuilding lives, compassion. One person’s stepping out to help another is now helping to drive the fulfillment of other’s needs throughout the country, through the publishing of this inspirational true to life story. A Holiday Respite

I suppose we want to experience feelings of fulfillment – joy, love, hope, tenderness, amusement, generosity, faith, peace, harmony. Click on the link For info & ordering Norman Rockwell books

Art images of Christmas, such as this iconic Norman Rockwell painting, enfolds us in thoughts of things that keeps us believing in the goodness of our world and humanity; providing us with a respite from the more difficult realities of life.

Last fall I was introduced to author David Baldacci through his book, I Wish You Well, and found him to be a great story teller. He has a newly released book called, Forgotten, that is near the top of the NY Times Bestselling List, in print and e-book format. So, last week I decided to read his holiday tale, The Christmas Train. I enjoyed this light read and liked his quirky characters. The story was as sappy as maple sugar. In one turn of the story, had it been a true case scenerio, people would have died, or at the very least, frozen to the point of injury. But, in the spirit of Christmas, all turns out well. Santa has always brought our family at least one new Christmas book or movie annually. Holiday Inn had to be replaced last year. The DVD was so worn with use it no longer had a clear picture.

Meaningful Family Gifts

I remember it well. As a child, during the Christmas season, I felt like the ornaments that consumed my thoughts. The bubbling lights that sat clipped to our white feather Xmas tree brought me enormous happiness.  And to think that our mother let us set up the tree, with branches that looked like extended angel wings, in the bedroom  I shared with my twin sister, was more than I could have ever hoped for in life.

I couldn’t wait for dark so I could lay in my bed and watch mesmerized, before I fell asleep, trying to figure out what made the liquid in the vials bubble and boil. Had my maternal grandparents, who had given us the tree and lights, filled the vials themselves? I’d heard of gold, frankincense and myrrh from Christmas stories. “Did the lights contain magic oil, liquid gold, frankincense or myrrh?  Whatever that stuff was.” I thought. “Perhaps it was fairies flitting in the night, waving their wands over the tree that made the vials have movement.” 

My sister was so lucky; she got extra peeks of the lights in the middle of the night. She often woke up hungry, so my mother packed her a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every night, wrapped it in waxed paper, and set it beside the bed. When her stomach began rumbling, she’d eat the snack, and watch the lights on the tree. I was never hungry, so I missed out and slept through the night.

Begin Everyday with Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Week to All! It has been a year since I have been with my family, so I ‘ll be taking a break from blogging and return to All Things Fulfilling on the Monday after Thanksgiving. I hope over the holiday you are with people who bring meaning and special times to your life.

Does this image conjure up some warm thoughts and feelings about your own heritage? Perhaps it may bring fulfilling memories of family members who led the way or of our country’s pilgrims and pioneers. Reflect and reminisce about some of the traditions that you still celebrate from Thanksgivings gone by. 

In the aftermath of the election season, also take a few minutes to say a prayer for the  military who have protected our freedoms. Although there are people who are unhappy about the election, we are so very fortunate to live in a nation where we can make a choice through our voting. The American story of freedom is like no other in any other nation. Count your blessings on this day, one by one. 

On  Thursday, remember the words of Walt Disney: “Our heritage and ideals, our code and standards – the things we live by and teach our children are preserved or diminished by how fully we exchange ideas and feelings.”

Fulfillment Etiquette at Thanksgiving

Dear Ms. Nice Netiquette: 

 I am writing to you because I am faced with a dilemma that involves fulfillment. I am hoping that you and our internet readers will send me their opinions. Here is the situation: 

A large part of my East Coast family, which is a lot of people, are planning to meet myself, my husband and our son, in the southwestern part of the country for Thanksgiving. We are really looking forward to having  ‘turkey day’ in a unique region and showing the “East Coasters” something different. 

All say that getting together and having fun is what is important. That part is easy- thankfully, we are not like some families that you read about that leave gatherings arguing and at odds with each other.

The dilemma is this – What to have for Thanksgiving? We will be in a rental place with a kitchen so we could pull most anything off – if, I’ll reiterate “if” we really want to. Some are stuck on the idea of having the traditional Thanksgiving Day fare. Others say “who cares? Let’s go get tacos or something different.” Traditionalists retort, “What is Thanksgiving without all the trimmings?” Myself, I just want us to all be together. Our opportunities for reunions have gotten less frequent because some have moved from the East to various parts of the country  – that makes it difficult. 

Trying to satisfy so many different tastes is a predicament. Some of them would eat anything. Others are vegans, some are classified as just plain organic or health food conscious,  others don’t tolerate hot or spicy stuff. We have a gourmet chef  in the family but, we will be nice and give him the day off since he will be on vacation.

Please, Ms. Nice Netiquette, send me some signals – your advice, your opinion, a tip- off, a wink, a nod in the right direction…anything, so I will know what to do in this situation. I am the person in charge.

I am interested in knowing what you would do to make sure everyone has a fulfilling meal for Thanksgiving. I know the holiday is still two weeks away but please send me your thoughts. I want to begin my planning.
