Braveheart

“When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into it’s writing.” ~ Enrique Jardiel Poncela

Someone not too long ago made the comment to me that “I am a brave woman to bare my soul through blogging.” Her remark took me by surprise and I began to think about why people write and whether putting pen to paper is an act of bravery.

I came to the conclusion that, yes for many, writing is an act of courage. Therapeutic writing often addresses wrongdoings or failings in one’s life.  Topics of therapeutic writing can be ugly and fraught with raw emotion. Feelings of victimization, being punished or bullied, thoughts of resentment, shame, grief or frustration is often addressed in therapeutic writing. Acts of contrition are often mentioned.  Writing is cathartic and a useful tool of psychological therapy for many.

Writing a memoir takes guts too! Reflecting on one’s own life is not always easy. The act of sharing one’s own life story takes courage.  Deep reflection on one’s own life and it’s purpose often digs up unpleasant moments and times that have been pushed way back, lest they be remembered.

No, I am not a brave woman. I write because it is fun. It gets my fingers goin’ and my thoughts flowin’ and if someone likes my writing, it is all that more satisfying and fulfilling.

Ready, Set, Launch!

Your dream is about to become a reality! Your book or film has been published or produced, and now it is time to think about getting your product into the hands of your audience.

An order fulfillment company is the answer to those nagging administrative and shipping tasks that an independent publisher is faced with.  After all, you are a writer and a publisher. Your primary business is not fulfilling and shipping orders (and that means world-wide shipping in this age of e-commerce). Let someone else handle those tasks so you can focus on what you do best – creating, inspiring, educating and entertaining through the power of books and film.

Without the distraction of processing and shipping orders – you can get ready, set and  DSC_0094 your next creative endeavor!

Funding for Filmmakers

j0434793

There is not a shortage of creative talent in this world. There are more ideas and inspiring subjects for documentary films than there are “Carter’s Has Liver Pills,” to use my Mom’s ancient expression. We are a generous people, We Americans! There are so many outstanding non-profit organizations spreading the good news and helping others in this country. Many have inspiring tales to tell through the power of film.

The biggest stumbling block for independent filmmakers is finding funds to bring a project to fruition and getting enough financial backing to professionally market a film. Films of award winning caliber may not necessarily mean a feature film blockbuster. But, an outstanding film needs to attract the attention that it deserves.

There is grant funding available through Mandy.com and the Independent Documentary Association (DIA) to name a few resources. They both post deadlines and grant opportunities. PBS also offers non-profit status for film projects. It is a selective process, but I have yet to see a PBS film production that was not worth viewing!

Hiring a professional grant writer could pay off. They know the lingo, the approach and can help you navigate through the process of obtaining funds. And don’t forget, include a budget for professional marketing of your film in your application for funding.

Teaching and Inspiring, No Matter What!

I want to honor my friend Amy in my blog today. She inspires me to no end and our friendship has been unwavering for more than 30 years. She has been fighting the fight of breast cancer for alot of years now.

What amazes me is her ability to accept things as they are, move ahead and enjoy life anyway. She has always had this ability but, it has never been more evident than it is today.

She has been the one to take care of us, her friends, when news of her cancer has been disappointing. She has been the one more interested in our lives than her trials and tribulations. She has been the one to teach us that our troubles pale compared to someone elses. Amy is a natural born teacher. In her 25 year teaching career, she was awarded Vermont teacher of the year, not once but twice!

Cancer is a heavy cross to bear. To Amy and to all those others stricken with cancer, thank you for the lessons that you teach us and for the dignity with which you live your lives. You are “angels” in my book!

A New Day Rising!

There is a group 1,600 filmmakers that have come together to produce “films that matter.” This group of filmmakers, Nomads Land Network www.NomadsLand.com partner with non-profits, ecotourism and volunteerism groups to produce social issue media and documentary films. I am so excited about this network of filmmakers. This is the stuff we at Cornerstone Fulfillment Service, LLC get all excited about and want to shout “Hurray!”

I told you there is alot of good stuff on the horizon in independent filmmaking!

Angels and Such

“Many hands make light work” ~ John Heywood

One of my favorite movies of all time is “Lilies of the Field” starring Sidney Poitier. The basic story line is that an unemployed construction worker ends up at a remote plot of land when his car breaks down, while traveling through. The land, located in the west, is being worked by some nuns with a vision to build a chapel and a school. The long and short of it is – Homer Smith (played by Poitier) ends up being the “angel” in the story, convincing the community to join hands. They labor together and contribute materials to build the beautiful, yet simple chapel.

The lessons of this film prevail as strongly today as they did back in 1963 when the film was produced. Anything can be accomplished in  strong communities with lots of willing hands to help.
