Growth of Audio Book Industry

“The reason why the universe is eternal is that it does not live for itself; it gives life to others as it transforms.” ~ Lao Tzu

On Tuesday afternoon we had our monthly We Write Steamboat meeting – a local networking group for independent publishers. It was reported that one of our members, author D.A. Hill, now has an audio book version of his novel. It’s selling well and we discussed the growth of the audio book industry.

We are fortunate to be living in an age when we have so many reading choices. Publishing  has gotten more complicated because of the new options. Learning what readers desire can be very useful for authors who are considering venturing beyond publishing books-in-print. The Independent Publisher, an on-line publication, has posted an interesting article about the growth of the audio book industry. Here is the link.http://bit.ly/11hlMyJ.

The surge of the industry does not surprise me, for the following reasons:

  • The ability to multi-task and listen at same time
  • Portability
  • You can listen while driving or on a personal computer
  • Storage space not needed on a bookshelf
  • Audio books are environmentally wise – no paper/printing involved.

So many reading options are now available. Hopefully youth, who love all things digital, will find a more fulfilling reading experience on their electronic  and audio devices and their interest in the literary world will not wane during the teen years. Audio books are also excellent for seniors whose eyesight has been diminished with age.

All Things Fulfilling is interested in hearing from our readers and subscribers through a poll. What is your favorite method of having books delivered to you ? Do you enjoy digital, audio or books- in-print? The insight we gain through the poll will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Film Friday: Inocente

“ Art is not what you see but what you make others see.” ~ Degas

A life was changed on Academy Award night, when Inocente, a documentary film about a homeless girl and her passion for art, won an Oscar. Indeed, despite a dark and lonely past, Izucar, the subject of this real life story, has created a bright world around herself through her colorful art.  Her unwillingness to give up on life and her belief in sharing her art with others has made for an inspiring story.

Husband and wife filmmakers, Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine decided to focus on the plight of Inocente Izucar when they met her through their involvement with artist Matt D’Arrigo and founder  ARTS(A Reason to Survive), “a non-profit organization that focuses on using art as a form of therapy and healing, for children and young adults struggling with major life challenges..

According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, 1 out of every 45 children live a transient lifestyle, floating from street to motel to shelters to living out of cars. This number has increased 33% in the past three years alone. http://usat.ly/YtbFoP

art of inocenteIzucar is representative of all youth who have discovered that their brightest moments in an hour or a day comes when they are exploring different mediums of art. For many, it is the only thing that gives them a positive reason to live.

E-Book Sales 2012

“You can tap on a word to see what it means and you can make the words big or small.”  ~ 9 year old girl, Virginia

The first quarter of 2013 will soon be coming to an end, and reports on book sales in 2012 have been complied and released from many sources. E-books continue to increase in popularity, as technology continues to offer improved products such as digital readers, and tablets.

e-book softwareAccording to The Kids and Family Reading Report, published by Scholastic, “as much of 46% percent of children have read an e-book.” They are being used more frequently in the classroom and for this tech savvy generation of children, e-books designs are incorporating interactive features that children like.

The Kindle Fire, a digital book reader had presales back in September 2011 of one million units per week. According to Dave Limp, V.P. of Amazon “Kindle Fire is the most successful product we’ve ever launched- it’s the bestselling product across all of Amazon for 11 straight weeks.”

Attached is an article from Venturebeat.com about e-book sales in 2012. I’ll let the information speak for itself, rather than try to interpret it for you. http://bit.ly/Zq5L8s

Not convinced this is a fair assessment of the e-book market? Here are a few other articles which also cite a growing demand for digital books.

From analyzing the reports, there is a healthy market for e-books. The growing use technology in our lives, an increased focus on sustainable, green living, the affordability of e-books and the ability to store books in a computer or handheld digital device rather than on bookshelves that take up space in rooms, in my opinion explain why e-book sales is a growing market.

Social and Emotional Learning

There is always a moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in. ~ Graham Green

Barb Gueldners book on Social and Emotional learningAn objective of teaching is to prepare children to be academically strong. It is also important to give children other skills they will need so they grow to be well-rounded adults, able to cope with the stresses of life. Teaching professionals are increasingly being asked to add social and emotional learning into the classroom. Having the right tools and resources to add this modality of teaching, is important.

Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom: Promoting Mental Health and Academic Success by Kenneth W Merrell, PhD and Barbara Gueldner
is just one publication offered by Guilford Press, a publishing company focused on providing “books, periodicals, software, and DVDs in mental health, education, geography, and the social and behavioral sciences.”

A variety of teaching strategies, used in the classrooms, is offered in the book Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom: Promoting Mental Health and Academic Success. The book also addresses how to incorporate these social and emotional learning principles into curriculum and, how to adapt the program for classes that have a range of academic needs and cultural diversity.

Any learning program needs to be able to assess the program’s efficacy. This book also gives administrators and teachers ways to monitor progress and use the approaches outlined for utmost effectiveness.

Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom: Promoting Mental Health and Academic Success, published in February 2010, was released in e-book format in March 2011. Both formats can be ordered through the Guilford Press website. Please visit this link. http://bit.ly/YdGhKL .

Teachers, add this publication to your bookshelf, and watch your students reap the rewards of being emotionally and socially fit.

A “Tweek” to a Word Brings Response

On Tuesday we had the first meeting of the year for our meet-up group, We Write Steamboat (formerly SHe Writes Steamboat). A decision was made at the end of last year to change the name of our group to encourage more male authors/publishers to participate in this monthly networking opportunity for independent publishers in Steamboat and Routt County, Colorado.

Guess what? A little “tweek” to a word, brought more male writers to the group. They outnumbered the women, this month. Although we have had male independent publishers attend since the inception of the group, almost two years ago, our goal for the year is to welcome even more.

EreaderprintThe town of Steamboat Springs and the surrounding Routt County has many writers who are drawn to this area for its inspiring landscape, recreational opportunity and an alternative lifestyle. Creativity, artistry and innovation in this town draw many location neutral businesses. With the development of digital technology, business for some people can be accomplished from anywhere. Living in an urban hub like New York, because you are a publisher, is no longer necessary with the ability to send files and images electronically. The new option of e-book publishing requires no shipping or printing companies.

Feel free to look at the files for our authors we have set up on our We Write Steamboat Facebook page. http://on.fb.me/W7aadC. Check out the diversity of subjects, we Steamboat independent publishers have written about. Our group has award-winning authors with award winning books; some have books in print and others have e-book publications. Some are available in several formats.

It is going to be a good year for our group, I can just feel it. We Write Steamboat has more publications that are in various stages of production that will be added to the files on Facebook as they are completed.

True, Inspiring Entrepreneurial Stories

A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.”Richard Branson, Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurial stories. Perhaps you have a yarn to share of your own exploration, exploits and success in business. Have you ever thought to relate it in book form? Now is as good a time as ever, all through independent publishing.

In this day and age, you don’t necessarily even have to pay for storage and warehousing of inventory and many other hassles that come with selling paperback and hardbound publications. No, I am not telling you a wild story, I’ll leave that to the Banana Republic. I am talking about the growing industry of e-book publishing.

In the recounting of their business adventure that started out with no previous business start-up experience, and a $1500 investment, Mel and Patricia’s passion for fashion, adventure and innovation built their company to behemoth status internationally.

wild companyWild Company: The Untold Story of the Banana Republic may give you insight into how to share your own business’ success story. Check it out.Click here for info & ordering Wild Company.

If you have already had proven business or entrepreneurial success, you would probably be a “natural” at independent publishing. You probably already have the right spirit; perhaps technical skills to become an independent publisher utilizing digital platforms. If you need help, ask a company that specializes in e-commerce and e-marketing for independent publishers , they  can  support your efforts.

Want to know more about independent publishing before you get started? There is an on-line webinar published by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association called On the Fast Track: The Independent Publishing Industry http://bit.ly/10cCp1Y  that will provide you with basic knowledge about  the new generation of publishing whereby ordinary people are telling extraordinary stories and benefiting from telling  them however they want to, creatively.

Connected Through a Gesture

Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end. ~Scott Adams

It’s hard to find good news on TV. The other day, I was getting more disturbed by the moment, as I flipped through the TV news channels. Everything I heard was negative and upsetting. I subject myself to that, as little as possible.

Finally, I flipped to Fox News and just happened to catch the story of Laura Schroff & Maurice Mazyck. Have you heard their beautiful story? It is about the power of one person to change the life of another. Although, if you listen to interviews of these two people, whose lives came together many years ago, this is, by no means, a one-sided story.

The tale is about trust, family, hunger, need, rebuilding lives, compassion. One person’s stepping out to help another is now helping to drive the fulfillment of other’s needs throughout the country, through the publishing of this inspirational true to life story. Click here for info and ordering An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny.

Proceeds from this book are being donated to No Kid Hungry, a non-profit organization. http://bit.ly/Wmsej9.

an invisible threadThe story, The Invisible Thread, has become a NY Times Best Selling book. It would make for an outstanding book to film adaptation. I hope it is in the works!

Rather than tell you more, please take the time to visit this website. Be prepared! It will deeply move you, but in a way that is very different than most news stories. http://www.aninvisiblethread.com/
